Date for your diary. Father’s Day is on Sunday June 19. It’s the one time of year where dads can guilt trip their kids into buying them gifts. Usually a kid’s generosity extends merely to a pair of socks or some Walmart aftershave, but, for those who really believe their old man is worth the extra effort, here are 6 watches guaranteed to transform that forced smile into a huge and happy grin. You’ve got one week to get it together.

Described as the serious sports watch for serious people (and who is more serious in your life than your dad), the SEIKO Prospex dial design has just one objective; maximum legibility, even deep in the ocean where sunlight does not penetrate. The hour markers are large, so as to allow the maximum surface area and depth for Seiko’s Lumibrite coating. The hands, too, are wide and easy to read. Air Blue Papa Praesto
Father’s Day, Papa Praesto, makes perfect sense. Based in NYC, Deep Blue is well known for its dive watches, but recently they have also introduced pilots watches as well, yet the watch can double as a good diver as it has water resistance to 200 meters. The 44mm watch comes in a range of 6 colors, and runs on a Miyota 8218 automatic movement. Both the date and the crown are located at 4 o’clock. $160 on Amazon or $249 direct from the Deep Blue website.
Father’s Day Fantasy: Bulgari Octo Solotempo
This is Bhanu’s choice, and at just a shade over $7000, all I can say is what a wonderful son if he is planning to shell out for this beauty. I’ll be lucky to get a card. With its octagonal dial, the elegant 38mm watch takes its influence from the designs of the great Gerald Genta. The movement is BVL 191 Solotempo caliber decorated with cotes de Geneve, chamfering and snailed finishing. It has a 42 hour power reserve. The lacquered polished dial has hand applied indexes, and there’s a date window at 3 o’clock. Bhanu tells me he will be wearing it to the Don Giovanni Prague Opera House this summer. The watch is, of course, Officially Bhanu Approved. Find it here
