Baselworld 2016: Top 5 Chronograph Watches

We arduously explored several high quality chronographs at Baselworld 2016 and reviewed a vast swathe of them too. Now you can decide whether our top 5 matches your top 5.

Rolex Daytona Ref 116500 LN (White dial with black bezel)

Here we are firmly into Brad Bokkean territory. One of the major talking points of the show, the new Rolex Cosmograph Daytona in stainless steel is now – at last – available with a black ceramic bezel as the ref. 116500 LN. Previously found only on precious metal Daytona’s, the bezel is made of glossy black Cerachrom (ceramic) that is fade-resistant, with engraved markings coated with platinum. And in contrast to the steel bezel found on the current model, the new ceramic bezel is scratch-resistant. The 40 mm watch comes on an Oyster bracelet with the spring-loaded Oysterlock clasp as well as an Easylink extension to adjust the bracelet length by 5 mm. The watch is powered by caliber 4130, the in-house movement that has powered the Daytona since the year 2000. Price: 11,800.00 CHF

OMEGA Speedmaster CK2998 Limited Edition

Photos_8.Speedmaster CK 2998_311.

A Bhanu favorite, the original OMEGA Speedmaster CK2998 was released in 1959 and has since become one of the most sought-after vintage Speedmasters in the world. With its Alpha hands, symmetrical case and dark bezel, so it’s not only Bhanu that has a thing for it.  OMEGA has used this classic model as inspiration for the new Speedmaster “CK2998” Limited Edition. Many of the iconic features have been retained, yet the watch has been updated and offers more in terms of design. The first thing you’ll notice is the striking use of blue. This color has been used on all three subdials, as well as the minutes track and a polished ceramic bezel with tachymeter base scale. The tachymeter scale is also coated in Super-LumiNova for increased visibility in dark conditions.  There is a blue leather strap with subtle “beige” stitching and a polished buckle. Price:$5,400.00

Junghans Meister Driver Chronoscope

Junghans can’t seem to put a foot wrong at the moment. Not only does the Junghans Meister Driver display the time, it also evokes an entire era: the early years of modern motoring, a time of great technological pioneers. The Meister Driver combines the distinctive charm of automobiles from the 1930s with a passion for mechanical timepieces. The Meister Driver is a slim hand-wound watch, the first time Junghans has turned its attention to an automotive themed timepiece. It’s largely down to the fact that brand owner Steim is an avid car collector and has gone so far as to build his own car museum to house his personal collection. The color palette is inspired by the rare Maybach DS8 Zeppelin in dark gray and dove gray. Only 25 DS8 Zeppelins exist today. Price: $2464.00

Seiko Presage Urushi

Joe Kirk’s choice. He says the Presage was one of the most talked about bits of news from Seiko at this year’s Baselworld. Certainly he was talking about it. A lot. Joe writes: Presage targets the mid-low tier price point for mechanical watches, but offers excellent quality in its respective ranges.  The pieces that stood out the most in this line up are two new limited edition chronographs, each with unique dials made by hand.  First, the SRQ019 which features an enamel dial mimicking the dial of Seiko’s first wrist watch from 1913, the Laurel.  With the 12:00 numeral highlghted in red and blued hands, the SRQ019’s luxurious enamel dial is crafted by expert Mitsuru Yokozawa.  He ensures the color of the enamel to last for decades.  Only 1,000 pieces will be made. Price: $2,300.00

Ulysse Nardin Marine Chronograph Annual Calendar

An annual calendar is mid-way between a perpetual calendar and a simple calendar: it recognises days of 30 and 31 months, but it must be manually corrected once a year at the end of February. This complication, which has enjoyed phenomenal success, is a standout feature of Ulysse Nardin watches. Whereas traditional mechanisms comprise around 30 components, the Manufacture from Le Locle has succeeded in developing one containing only around a dozen. This quest for simplicity – also guaranteeing exceptional reliability – has become an authentic brand philosophy. The time and calendar indications of this new Marine Chronograph Annual Calendar may be adjusted either forwards or backwards without any risk of inadvertently damaging the in-house movement. A mechanical gem that is a worthy descendant of marine chronometers. Price: TBC

Other chronographs worthy of mention which we reviewed include the Chopard Mille Miglia 2016, Breguet Type XXI, and Bremont America’s Cup Regatta
