British watchmakers Omologato, founded in 2015, has created a limited edition chronograph designed to celebrate the life of 1976 Formula 1 world champion James Hunt.
The driver would have been 70 this year had his life not been cut short by a heart attack in 1993 at the age of just 46.
The Official James Hunt Chronograph is a limited edition watch of just 750 pieces that is dedicated to telling the story of a sporting legend.
In 2013, the highly acclaimed movie Rush, set in 1976, the year Hunt won the Formula 1 championship, gave viewers a taste of his temperament and talent, as well as his long standing rivalry with Niki Lauda. Their epic races are among the most memorable in F1 history. Chris Hemsworth was cast as James Hunt and Austrian racing driver Niki Lauda was portrayed by Daniel Brühl.
A promotional video featuring James’s son, and racing driver, Freddie Hunt has been released in conjunction with the launch of The Official James Hunt Chronograph.
In the video, Freddie Hunt talks about his father’s influence on his life and the design concept behind the watch. “It’s like having a little bit of James Hunt with you.” The Hunt family were heavily involved with the design of the Omologato watch throughout and were instrumental in the watch design.
The 42mm Official James Hunt Chronograph, which runs on a Japanese quartz chronograph movement, is available with either a leather strap or a nylon/leather bonded bracelet, both models feature a matt black dial, while James Hunts’ signature and his famous red, blue and yellow stripes are emblazoned across the dial. These are the colors on James’s race helmet, which in themselves were a nod to Wellington College, where James was educated.
The watches are available now in two styles: stainless steel or IP-plated with a limited edition 750 in each design, priced at £599.
“My dad was a ‘rebel of the track’, a maverick playboy and a hero, not just to me but to fans across the world and now his legacy lives on through this wonderful exclusive new watch. It’s like having a little bit of James Hunt with you.” Freddie Hunt
However, you don’t have to rush – the watches will be on sale by the end of September 2017
