There’s a lengthy ugly watch thread on Watchuseek, but while some of the watches in this selection are ugly, the real point is they are made by respected watchmakers or designers who should really know better. Here are a clutch of watches where good taste and unmistakable style took a vacation, despite the manufacture’s claims to the contrary.
Hublot Ultra Thin Skeleton Tourbillon King Gold
The perception: A skeleton watch in line with The “Art of Fusion” ethos, created by a manufacture capable of imagining never before seen skeleton watch concepts with a unique modern architectural aesthetic.
The reality: A blingy, new money watch with an unreadable dial and simply too much going on with a complication that is usually superfluous.
Graham Chronofighter Oversize GMT Big Date
The perception: Extremely appealing in terms of design, the Graham Chronofighter Oversize GMT Big Date offers an alternative to those dull and simple designs, with combinations of colors and materials that scream innovation and tastefulness
The reality: The watch certainly screams. Part of the clue is in the watch name – Oversize, at 47mm with the glaring black and green color combination combined with the hand grenade crown protector awkwardly placed on the left hand side of the watch, it’sa timepiece forever destined to catch on your shirt cuff.
Diesel DZ7279 MR.Daddy Sba Oversize Gunmetal Dial Red Band
The perception: This very eye-catching timepiece is part of the popular Mr Daddy collection by Diesel. This design features a gunmetal grey steel case with a killer red bezel and bracelet. The gun metal grey dial also features splashes of bright red across it as well as having a date function, chronograph and shows both digital time & analogue.
The reality: Diesel, nice jeans… shame about the watch.
Rolex Oyster Special Edition Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona Leopard
The perception: A dramatic departure from the majority of Rolex designs, this Daytona Chronograph features a leopard print dial and leather strap, in addition to an 18 kt yellow gold bezel set with 48 diamonds and 36 baguette cognac sapphires. It has attracted a fair amount of attention, not least because it costs in excess of $66,000.
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Diamond Bezel
The perception: One of the most iconic watches in the whole world of watches designed by Gerald Genta, arguably the most influential watchmaker of the past 50 to 60 years.
The reality: Yes, the AP Royal Oak Offshore is a classic that single handedly spawned the sports dress watch, but this version gilds the lily to the point where it’s just sad.
