Hong Kong-based UNDIVE has unveiled its first crowdfunded project on Kickstarter for a vintage-inspired professional diver’s watch. The new watch is called Dark Sea, with water resistance to 500 meters, and it has met its funding goal within two days of the launch.
The idea for the watch came from a group calling themselves Undive Watches Innovation, a band of diver’s/designers based in Hong Kong. Founded in 2015, the idea is to make affordable but highly collectable watches, and this is the first watch to be produced.
Based on vintage diver design cues, the Dark Sea model has echoes of a Seiko Ref. 6105 as worn by Martin Sheen’s Captain Willard in Apocalypse Now, but there are also Panerai Submersible influences in the watch as well.
Made from 316L stainless steel, the 45 mm piece is a professional tool watch. The case is fitted with a domed sapphire crystal and a helium release valve, and the case back is in stainless steel.
There is a choice of two models: Cold Steel (with a brushed steel bezel) and Black Storm (a black DLC coating on brushed bezel). The matte black dial has polished hour markers filled with blue Superluminova. The second hand has two luminous dots filled with Super Luminova BGW9 and Super Luminova Red respectively. Super Luminova Red will glow pink in the dark. The oversized 7.5mm screw-down crown is very easy for adjusting time. The 120-click unidirectional bezel is smooth and sure.
The Dark Sea is powered by Seiko’s Caliber NH35, a self-winding movement with a power reserve of 42 hours and hacking seconds function. The watch comes on an accordion style vulcanized rubber strap and is also supplied with a leather strap and a shark mesh bracelet.
You can pledge $436 on Kickstarter and the first watches are scheduled to be shipped in November of this year.
