Instagram has few hilarious watch related memes accounts (check out @horological_dicktionary), as well as good satire accounts which take air out of a watch industry that can sometimes take itself too seriously. But there is one unique account which posts original watch humor illustrations based on watch characteristics and collector behavior – it is @watchesandpencils. The man behind this account is Teun van Heerebeek, who is based in Netherlands. He is also a regular contributor for Fratellowatches blog. Teun is celebrating a major milestone by releasing a book called 60 Minutes. We asked him a few questions about his hilarious watch book.
WUS: Tuen, tell us what major milestone are you celebrating, and give us a brief overview of the book?
TVH: After 5 years of Watches & Pencils, I thought it was time for a special release to celebrate this milestone. At the end of 2018, I decided it should be a book with a nice overview of the 60 best illustrations. This time not only accompanied by information about the watches, but also by background stories and fun facts about the creation of the illustrations.
WUS: Why is the book called “60 minutes”?
TVH: I wanted to make a link to watches. A normal table of contents is just boring. I thought it would be a fun wink to time. I decided to go for ’60 minutes’. 60 illustrations in 60 minutes. The book, therefore, counts down from ’60’ to ‘0’.
WUS: So, are the illustrations in the book meant to be a compilation of your favorite published work?
TVH: I went into the archive myself and personally selected all the works. Some of these works have never been published before. All highlights are included. A colorful collection of works for Fratello.com, Chrono24 and also free work. Most famous brands are represented in the book. For example: Rolex, Omega, Breitling, and Panerai. In addition, there are countless well-known watch terms including ‘tool watch’, ‘desk diver’ and ‘wrist shots’.
WUS: Thank you for giving us an advanced preview of the book. There is much more in this book than just illustrations.
TVH: Each illustration contains information about the realization of the work and an explanation of the process. In addition, of course, the watches in the various works are also covered. The book is intended as a picture book, conversation starter and just to occasionally put a smile on the face of a watch enthusiast.
The book contains various personal notes. The illustrations are preceded by a short biography about me and the creation of Watches & Pencils. Subsequently, the foreword is done by various prominent people in the world of watches. I have done everything to make the book as exclusive and personal as possible: Each book is personally signed and numbered by me. The book is limited to only 300 copies. It is hardcover and sewn bound with nearly 140 pages.
WUS: Finally, how can our readers order your book?
TVH: The book can only be purchased via the Watches & Pencils webshop. The book costs 70 Euro + shipping costs (maximum 10 Euro). The book is shipped worldwide with Track and Trace. If you order now you will receive the book before the holidays!
