We introduced Watchuseek readers to StockX just over a year ago. But if the StockX phenomenon is new to you, StockX was founded by Josh Luber, Greg Schwartz, and billionaire Dan Gilbert in February 2016. It has established itself as the first-ever stock market of things, the things you just have to own. The site was launched as a way for customers to buy and sell sought-after items online, but with better real-time price transparency.
It’s a concept that has turned into gold. As of June of this year, the Detroit-based company is worth US$1 billion. The site very successfully taps into the impulses of collectors, especially limited-edition sneaker collectors and watch collectors in search of the recherche, the hard to get and the covetously cool. It then enables buyers and sellers to trade very much like they would on the real stock exchange.
THE STOCKX GOLD RUSH
So, starting 10 AM EST Tuesday, September 24th and finishing 11:59 PM EST Thursday, September 26th, StockX is celebrating with a gold rush. And it’s so generous it’s certainly likely to trigger another gold rush.
On offer (in the US only) are two gold watches. One a Gold Rolex Day-Date, Ref: 18238, the other a Casio Gold G-SHOCK. Each will be on offer for just US$1,849. Click here in order to place your bid.
WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO
- Participation is simple. First, you have to create a StockX account or login via the StockX mobile app, which is available in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Then you must place an $1,849 Bid on the 2 Gold Watches RestockX. But don’t worry, you won’t be charged unless you win.
After that, all you have to do is sit back and hope you get lucky. The genuine gold Rolex Day-Date currently trades on StockX for around US$9,608, while the Casio Gold G-SHOCK trades for US$461.
The reason you have to put in a bid for US$1,849 is that in 1849, the California Gold Rush — which had started just the year before — was in full force. Determined gold seekers were known as ‘forty-niners.’
That same year, the U.S. Congress passed the Gold Coinage Act allowing the minting of two new gold coins, the gold dollar and the double eagle worth US$20.
