What is the CODE41 X41? It’s an intricately beautiful skeleton watch that features cutting-edge design elements, a unique pair of transparent date dials, and sculptural lugs on a finely machined case. It’s also exclusive: produced in small, numbered series, the first two editions of the X41 were limited to just 700 pieces, all of which sold out in only 30 days.
Now, with the X41 Edition 3 set to debut, CODE41 is proving that fine watchmaking doesn’t have to be limited to billionaires, and that a truly unique timepiece can be attainable through the power of the Internet.
Claudio D’Amore spent ten years as a designer for brands such as TAG Heuer and Montblanc before branching out on his own, founding CODE41 in 2016. The idea was to engage the greater watch community, inviting enthusiasts to play an active role in the design process by collaborating on mechanical watch designs, guided—of course—by his considerable expertise. It’s never easy to build a community from scratch, but the Swiss microbrand might have done exactly that, with over 200,000 like-minded members joining D’Amore and CODE41 on the project.
Through crowdsourcing and hands-on involvement from watch enthusiasts, the company raised over half a million Swiss francs in December 2016. Just under three years later, preorders of the X41 Edition 3 surpassed one million dollars (US) in only six hours.
The X41 features a titanium case with a signed crown and a 24mm lug width. There is no dial, just a ring of markers that encompasses three-quarters of the face, with a unique X-shaped bridge design, anodized in an array of colors.
All of the bridges are not only exposed for a glimpse of the mechanical magic underneath, but also finished with contrasting brushed and polished looks. 50-meter water resistance and LumiNova coated hands add to the functionality.
Even the movement of the X41 is custom: developed exclusively for the CODE41 community, it was designed, produced and assembled entirely in Switzerland. The X41’s 33-jewel automatic movement features a 45-hour power reserve, plus a unique peripheral oscillating weight, which revolves around the edge of the movement on a rail and ball bearings. Compared to a traditional rotor, this weight reduces the movement thickness and allows more of it to be shown, truly showcasing the X41’s mechanical beauty. Only a handful of manufacturers have attempted this successfully, but years of development, plus the technical prowess of CODE41 and its brand partners, have allowed for a quiet, reliable implementation of this feat of watchmaking ingenuity.
The price point of the X41 is equally attractive: just under $5,500 USD will net you this limited edition watch, while similar models can run upwards of $20,000 USD (or more).
The X41 Edition 3 is available for preorder through November. But you’ll need to act fast if you don’t want to miss out: the wait list for the Edition 3 started at over 3,800 people, and since preordering began on October 29th, more than $2,149,000 worth of orders have already been placed. Or, in other words, the crowd has spoken.
