two gw-m5610 with bad auto el?

I have been wearing my gw-m5610 for a year which was made, according to the number on the back case, during 2012 and so far it was working properly. Recently I want to buy a new one for my friend as a gift. However, the first one came from amazon has a bad auto el, or to be more specific if I turn on the auto.el function and tilt it certain angle it does not light up no matter what the ambient light condition is. I then tried the testing mode bu pressing the buttons on 2, 8, 10 clock position simultaneously and not surprisingly the tilt angle detector is bad. So I asked amazon for an exchange.

But to my big surprise, the new watch which arrived today has exactly the same problem.

I check the number on the back and the second watch was made on 212C, the 212 days on 2013 if I am understanding it correctly. The one I returned to amazon was made, if my memory serves, around the same time.

Two watches in a row with bad auto.el....o|

I checked amazon review and noticed that one customer recently encountered the same problem as me: having two gw-m5610 with bad auto.el.

I understand that no quality control is 100% perfect but I am still confused...

Another 5610 with faulty tilt sensor here. Got mine couple of months ago, auto light was working although it was a pretty unreliable, I sometimes had to tilt my hand about 90Âş to get it to light up. Didn't think much of it, since it's not a feature I regularly use, but few days ago I realized it stopped working completely. After some googling I found about tilt sensor test, gave it a try, and got no response. I shook it a bit, did more testing, and from time to time 8888 shows up, maybe one in twenty tries and when I tilt it almost upside down. It's too much hassle turning it back since I'm from Croatia and bought it from UK based shop, and I didn't use auto light that much anyway so I will just keep it as it is, but I am a bit disappointed. Oh well, it's just my luck with electronic gadgets I guess, my last three phones (all Nokias) all had to go to service while still under warranty, screen died out on my new tablet, and just recently got a nice little kids Timex from Amazon for my niece's 6 birthday that is running slow couple of seconds per day...

M5610BC here, faulty auto-EL too! If I put it in TLT testmode, it doesn't register tilting the watch. This function works fine on my other G-Shocks, so it's not that I use the wrong angle. I got it to work once, but only once.

I have to look up the production date at home, it's somewhere at the end of 2013.

I have both the GW-M5610 and the GW-M5610BC, made on August 19, 2013 and September 26, respectively. The Auto-EL is completely non-functional on both watches. While this could be considered a bummer, I rarely, if ever, use this feature, so it doesn't really matter to me. Of course, I would like it to work even if I don't use it, but I love the watch as it is and decided to let it go.

For me, it's too much trouble to deal with repair or replacement since I basically never use Auto-EL, but this information might be good to know for those who are considering this model and use the Auto-EL often.

Hello to everyone, it's my first post here!

I just found this thread after ordering a GW-M5610BC... I received the watch yesterday, and the Auto-EL is working fine, just like any other of my G's.

Production code is 227C, the same day as the defective one of computer_freak.

Thank you for your wishes, pssyche & James142!

I will keep an eye on it, maybe it's a bit early to make conclusions after the first 24 hours of wearing the watch. Of course I'll report if the Auto-EL becomes faulty after a while!

best regards

I just send the seller an email about the faulty Auto EL. The watch is currently not in a wearable state (the spring bar tool has yet to arrive), so I might as well send it for repairs or swap it for another.

If they send me a new one, I'll ask them to test it before they ship it.

The seller of the watch didn't respond to my issue, even though I've send multiple reminders. Bummer. Guess I have to deploy the negative feedback artillery.

I just sent my local Casio distributor a message asking for advice on the tilt-sensor, I hope that they can help me out on this one.

I've found the message, right here:

Casio Men's GWM5610-1 G-Shock Multi-Band Atomic Digital Sport Watch: Watches: Amazon.com

[QUOTE Item Under Review

While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!)
We're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

I had a new 5610-er delivered on Wed and the auto el only works if I sharply and quickly spin my wrist to read the display and even then its hit and miss.
Case back is stamped 231C

Not too fussed as I really like it and don't want to return it for warranty repair or replacement while i am enjoying it.
Will watch this thread with interest.

Interestingly, mine has now started to work. Maybe it just needed to loosen up a bit? I dunno, regardless - I have now had to switch it off as it comes on in low light every single time I turned my wrist.
Cool feature, rarely needed for me personally.

Based on the fact that a lot of people have found battery-powered G-Shocks still working after being forgotten in drawers for many years, the LCD itself doesn't really use that much power.

I have 8 solar G's that go into October on "High" and then won't see direct sunshine for five or six months. I keep Power Saving turned off, hourly chime turned on, and several will make it to spring and still be on "High." (Last week I noticed that three of mine had dropped down to Medium, and I charged them through a window for two days, mostly overcast and cloudy, and they're back on "High.")
