In celebration of its long-standing partnership, Grand Seiko and Timeless Luxury Watches have teamed up to present a new limited-edition Grand Seiko piece.

Inspired by a blizzard in Shirojiri, Japan, where the Shinshu Studio is located, the Grand Seiko Spring Drive Limited Edition: SBGE249 is assembled and adjusted by hand. The design encapsulates a bold blue GMT hand, and while held at certain angles, contrasts with its mesmerizing shine and color like the beauty of heavy snow.

In both performance and appearance, the limited-edition watch expresses the best of Grand Seiko’s watchmaking. It features Grand Seiko’s unique Spring Drive caliber, launched 20 years ago this year and combining the moving force of a mainspring with high precision. The blued-steel GMT hand moves gracefully over the white blizzard dial further highlighting a glide motion that reflects the natural and continuous flow of time itself.

The caliber has a high accuracy of +/-10 seconds per month and a power reserve of 72 hours. Encased in stainless steel and a bracelet with tri-fold push button release clasp, the sapphire crystal see-through case-back showcases the Grand Seiko Lion emblem in blue metallization.

Each year three million visitors and more than 4,000 sailors annually meet in northern Germany to participate in Kiel Week, the world’s largest water-sports event.

This year’s 150th edition of Kiel Week coincided with two important anniversaries at Tutima Glashütte: the Saxony, Germany brand became “Official Timekeeper” of the prestigious regattas fifteen years ago; and ten years ago, Tutima Glashütte began participating on the fjord with its own racing yacht, which is sailed by the only all-women crew in Germany’s offshore sector.

Meanwhile, Tutima’s hot-air balloon with a depiction of the Grand Flieger chronograph on its exterior has flown as a highly visible trademark in the sky above the Baltic Sea since 2016.

With their 46-foot racing cruiser, skipper Kirsten Harmstorf-Schönwitz and her crew of “Pink  Ladies” have achieved numerous important successes during the past decade. They won a silver medal at the German Championships in 2014, a bronze medal there in 2016, and were vice-champions at both the European Championships in 2017 in the Corinthian ranking and in the overall standings at Kiel Week in 2018.

TUTIMA M2 PIONEER

Tutima’s M2 Pioneer is designed for use under extremely rigorous conditions. Its robust titanium case is pressure tested to 30 atm while an additional case of soft iron protects Tutima Calibre 521 from the ill effects of magnetic fields. Uncompromising functionality and reliability are the basic principles of a professional timing instrument. The NATO chronograph by Tutima, developed in 1984 and the official service watch of the German army’s pilots to this day, has outstandingly proven itself in global use for decades.

“Our many years of commitment in Kiel prove that reliability is a key value for Tutima. We express this dependability through our sports sponsoring and in every watch that we build in our manufacture. Now the M2 continues this classic timepiece’s success story. We have made several improvements that will not only profit professional users but also sporty, active amateurs.”

I’ve still got a 90’s boombox somewhere in my garage. Boombox? Yes. Way before Alexa was pumping out your favorite streamed tunes from Spotify or Amazon, people would stick CDs or cassettes into massive portable cassette radios that pumped out sounds at an anti-social volume.

Now G-SHOCK has just unveiled its latest set of analog-digital watches with the all-new GA-140 series, a collection inspired by the ’90s. The watches have a dial display fashioned to look like the huge boomboxes that were carried on the shoulder (but not by me) around the streets of London and New York in the late 80s and 90s.

The series’ big outer case is borrowed from G-SHOCK’s GA-100 and GA-110 series. This updated dial features an analog speed indicator sub-dial at the 3 o’clock position, a digital time display at the 12 o’clock position, and a date display at the 6 o’clock position, as well as an array of other LCD displays surrounding the hour and minute hands, reminiscent of latter-day digital gadgets.

Shock-resistant and water-resistant up to 200 meters, the GA-140 series is magnetic resistant and has an automatic LED light for illumination.

There are five models in the GA-140 series and the watches come in several color options: black, black with red and orange accents, blue, red and grey, and purple.

All models will be available at G-SHOCK retailers for US$99 in August.

On July 14th, 2019, Stowa celebrated its 92nd anniversary with a customer appreciation day with a hike and get together in the picturesque Black Forest town of Engelsbrand.  Even though Stowa has not been in a continuous ownership, Jörg Schauer acquired the company in 1996 from Werner Storz, the successor and son of founder Walter Storz.  As a trained watchmaker and designer, Jörg re-designed the historical STOWA watches in co-operation with Hartmut Esslinger, a well-known industrial designer.

Stowa Classic Flieger 40 White with Blue Hands

I was joined by Mike Stuffler, Watchuseek Forum moderator and German watch expert, along with two watch friends from Czech Republic and Slovakia (#watchfam) for the annual hike and event.  In order to commemorate this event, I requested Stowa for a custom Flieger White.  Stowa announced the Flieger Classic 40 White in the summer of 2018.  It was received well, especially with addition of blue hands.

The Flieger Classic 40 White has a 40mm stainless steel case which is brushed and grinded with hand.  The onion crown is easy to operate and is proportional to the size of the case.  The sapphire crystal on the dial is slightly domed and flat on the case back.  The height of the case is 10.20mm.  The lugs are flat and fit a 20mm strap.

The normal flieger edition has a white dial with light green color Arabic numerals, black hands, and black sub-minute markers works well on this dial.  The black date on white wheel adds to the modern interpretation of this watch since date is not traditional feature of a flieger watch.

Flieger Weiß Blau Limited for Chronos Magazine

Late last year Stowa announced a “Flieger Weiß Blau Limited” made exclusively for the German watch magazine Chronos.  This watch was almost perfect for me, but I wanted a small change which made a big difference for me.  I requested my Flieger Classic 40 White with blue hands, blue seconds hand, and a black date.  The black date complimented the black sub-minute markers, and blue hands added contrast to the white dial.

Custom Classic Flieger 40 White
Special engraving for the Stowa Hiking Event

Stowa uses the workhorse ETA 2824-2 movement to power the flieger.  I selected the ETA Basic for this watch.  You can select the ETA Top grade as an option as well with nice decoration, which further enhances the appearance and value of the watch.  It has a power reserve of 40 hours.  Stowa also offers engraving of rotor for a small fee, which is nice touch for special occasion or giving as a gift.  So, I decided to engrave “Stowa Hike 2019” to associate this event with the special flieger.

WatchBandits Leather Strap

To complete this special flieger, I had to find the right strap.  I like Stowa Pilot straps, and they are great for the black dial flieger, but did not complement the white dial as well.  So, I found the perfect strap on WatchBandit website.  I ordered the Vintage Midnight Blue strap with white stitching.  Luckily, Mike lives in Berlin, so he picked up the strap in-person, so I can wear it for the event.

This year the Stowa annual event had a big turnout with over 120 guests attending from Europe and beyond.  The guests opted for different difficulty of hiking in the Black Forest.  Our group opted for the medium hike, which was a 6km hike on top of the hill.  We met at 09:45AM in Engelsbrand-Salmbach, at Stowa’s Schwarzwaldhaus, and boarded the Goldstadt Bus, a 1957 Neoplan, at exactly 10:00AM.

Along the hike Stowa crew offered us wine, champagne, and Black Forest meats.  Even though we had some unpredictable rain along the hike, we took that as an opportunity to stand under the tall trees and take wrist shots.

The Goldstadt Bus took us back to the Schwarzwaldhaus where Stowa provided us with Maultauschen und Kartoffelsalat, smoked Black Forest trout, Black Forest ham and sausage. Delicious deserts were served by Master Chocolatier Kevin Kugel, who won number 7 in the WORLD CHOCOLATE MASTERS (Paris).  We enjoyed the Alpirsbacher beer in the afternoon while discussing watches with other collectors.

Inside the Schwarzwaldhaus two watchmakers showcased assembly and repairing of Stowa watches on the ground floor. One of them was setting the hands on a Schauer watch.  The showroom was located on the first floor. This was the most crowded place, as guests gathered around to try their favorite watches. This year Stowa also made special T-shirts for the Genusswanderung (translates to relaxing hike) event.  They sold out very briskly.

As the event wound down, we said our goodbyes, and promised to meet as a bigger #watchfam group next year.

Tissot celebrates its far-reaching ties to motor-racing with a re-issue of a seventies-style chronograph. The Tissot Heritage 1973 symbolizes the partnership that brings together Tissot and the Kessel Classics racing team.

The 43mm wide chronograph has a silvery grey dial featuring matte black counters and is available in a limited edition of 1973 pieces. To power this racing machine, Tissot has fitted the reliable and powerful ETA Valjoux 7753 self-winding movement.

The Tissot 1973 is a shaped chronograph, an oval cushion with domed lines in its three dimensions. Its crystal is a glass box cut in sapphire. Its second and chronograph hands are orange. The hour and minute hands are rectangular batons ending in a white tip. The dial is silvered with black counters and a tachymetric dial edge, for a Panda-style effect.

The watch comes on an overstitched black calfskin strap; a reproduction of the one Tissot had invented and patented in the 1960s, characterized by its large perforations. It alludes to pilots’ steering wheels of the time.

To create the Tissot Heritage 1973, Tissot took its inspiration from a model dating back to 1973, the Tissot Navigator. It was a key piece in the partnerships tying Tissot to motor-racing. From 1973, Tissot worked with Alpine which dominated the rally circuit. In 1974, the brand joined forces with Porsche for the Le Mans 24 hour Gran Turismo race. In particular, a strong bond was forged between the brand and the Swiss pilot, Loris Kessel, who competed in Formula 1 in 1976 under the Tissot banner.

Loris Kessel was fanatical about engines. He founded car dealerships in the Tessin area together with a racing division and another division dedicated to classic racing. This network was taken over by his son, Ronnie Kessel. In 2018, Tissot rekindled its partnership with the Kessel family by becoming the official partner of Kessel Classics, which owns Tissot Formula 1. This black and white car has excelled in competitions like the Monaco Historic Grand Prix, which it won in 2016.

The three dimensions of the steel case of the Heritage 1973 are curved. Its glass box is domed, following the same line, as are the horns and arched case back. They allow the 43-mm wide case to comfortably fit the wrist and easily slip under a shirt cuff. The bezel is satin-finished, the bezel that follows the lateral line of the case is burnished while the side is satin-finished. The finishing quality has rarely been achieved in a watch of this type.

Tissot Heritage 1973

There is, therefore, a direct connection between 1973 and 2019. Tissot revives its design heritage by faithfully re-issuing one of its finest chronographs. By rekindling a relationship that ties Tissot to the Kessel family, Tissot recalls its attachment to motor racing.

We promised we would provide more information about the 3 new and irresistible UNDONE Snoopy Lunar Watches, which launch today, and so here we are.

Fifty years on they capture just a tiny wearable essence of the excitement and amazement of the day man first landed on the moon with considerably less computer power than the cell phone in your pocket. In an extraordinary day of firsts, it was also the first time I was allowed to stay up past my bedtime to watch the lunar landing.

Peanuts x UNDONE Snoopy Moon Heritage

First up, we have the 41.8mm Snoopy Moon Heritage watch. Limited to just 300 pieces, it’s inspired by the very watches worn by the first astronauts to step on the moon. It features Snoopy at 3 o’clock wearing his space helmet with a red scarf around his neck, floating in the gentle gravity of the lunar surface. Snoopy lights up in the dark as do the hands and indices. The exact time and date of the lunar landing are shown at 6 o’clock just above the date. The watch also features the well-known signature of Peanuts creator Schulz.

How much?

US$480

Peanuts x UNDONE Snoopy Starlight

Next up is the Snoopy Starlight, a 40mm watch limited to just 300 pieces and featuring the famous beagle on a luminous starlit background. This watch features the time and date that Apollo X set off in May 1969.

These watches are by no means just a ‘me too’ 50th-anniversary moon landing promotion. It’s a legitimate piece of Apollo and Peanuts history, because the Apollo 10 Command Module 106, was christened “Charlie Brown”, while the lunar module was christened Snoopy. The mission was a dress rehearsal for the Apollo 11 landing on the moon and was the first time the Lunar Module was tested in lunar orbit.

Both these highly collectible limited editions come with a special LUNAR MISSION BOXSET and an extra parachute-cord wrist strap. The watches run on the ultra-reliable Seiko VK64 Mechanical-Quartz Hybrid Chronograph movement.

How much?

US$480

Customizable Peanuts x UNDONE Snoopy A.C.E.S

Finally, there’s also an unlimited customizable piece, because UNDONE firmly believes that luxury is all about making something personal to you. With this option, you can choose your dial color, your strap and your favorite from the entire Peanuts cast each dressed in their dedicated LUNAR MISSION orange astronaut suits. The watch comes with a bonus complimentary orange Cordura strap. You can also add your name, initials or a caption on the dial at 3 o’clock.

How much?

US$365

We have lift off! Grab your Peanuts x UNDONE Snoopy Lunar Watch now!

Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin spent just 21 hours and 36 minutes parked up on the lunar surface, and it could be all the time you’ll have to grab one of these highly collectible limited-edition Peanuts x UNDONE Snoopy Lunar watches, so if you want one, you better get to the launchpad now.

Did you know?

On Earth, a fully suited Apollo 11 astronaut with his equipment included weighed a hefty 500 pounds. But on the moon, his weight was only around 80 pounds!

Geneva-based brand ZRC pays homage to bronze, one of mankind’s greatest discoveries in use at least 3,500 years BC.

Bronze is a material appreciated for both its durability and its patina and is now used in the case of the new Grands Fonds Vintage 1964 Spirit Bronze, a limited edition of only 170 pieces.

Bronze is a precious alloy of copper, which gives it its golden honey color, and tin, which makes it tough. It has many advantages, in particular, a high resistance to corrosion and wear.

These qualities were already well-known in 3500BC when mankind learned how to hone it and turn it into tools, weapons and other instruments. Introduced to the world of watchmaking less than a decade ago, this material now forms part of the collection of Geneva-based brand ZRC.

The gray-green patina, which develops over time, makes each timepiece unique. The 1964 Spirit Bronze draws inspiration from its predecessor, the famous Grands Fonds 300 developed as early as 1960 by ZRC, officially adopted by the French Navy in 1964 and re-issued in 2015.

ZRC Grands Fonds Vintage 1964 Spirit Bronze

With full attachments and a crown at 6 o’clock, the 40.5 mm monobloc case, water-resistant up to 300 meters, is forged in bronze. Its bronze hue is picked out in subtle touches in the delicately marbled hand-patinaed matte black dial. It is also used in the body of the two wide skeletonized Magnum hour and minute hands and the lollipop style second hand, plus the hour circle formed of applied Arabic numerals and hour markers.

The sandy beige shade of the luminous “Old Radium” material applied to the face of the 1964 Spirit Bronze gently contrasts with its black face crisscrossed with thin stripes and protected by a 4 mm curved sapphire crystal.

The Crown Protection System guarantees the safety of the crown by preventing the strap with retractable lugs from being repositioned if the crown is not fully screwed down. The ECSTM (Easy Clean System) ensures the inside of the unidirectional rotating bezel is clean by diluting and removing sea salt, which when crystallized can irreparably damage a diving watch.

The watch runs on the powerful ETA 2824-2 caliber, a highly dependable mechanical self-winding movement, found in most ZRC timepieces, with a power reserve of 38 hours.

In the words of the company’s motto “la vie est Aventures”, life is full of adventures. Whether you prefer to be in nature or on asphalt, just putting this on your wrist, with its aged leather strap, will unleash your inner explorer.

This is another big one, as even the likes of Jomashop would never offer this Recraft this cheap—for prime day this Recraft will land at your door for $70.99. The self-winder is running the basic but reliable 7S26, has an exhibition caseback, and measures 43.5mm across.

Glass Top 12-Slot Watch Box

Though it wasn’t included in our watch storage roundup, this watch box is a pretty solid option for a price tag under $40. Its lower tray is adaptable, and a good spot to stash your spare straps and other things.

Citizen BM8180-03E Field Watch

citizen field watch

There’s one more fun budget beater in the mix, whose design kind of teeters on the border between a pilot and a field watch. It’s only 37mm across, so it won’t get in the way while you tackle household (or other) projects, and with 100m of water resistance it can get a little wet without issue. I’d always prefer a sapphire crystal on a tool watch, but in the same breath how much complaining can you do when you’re getting this for $56.99?

22mm And 24mm Quick-Release Canvas Watch Straps

Watch straps are also a crapshoot on Amazon, as you have to assume that you’re going to get what you pay for when you look at the budget end of things. That said, I’d risk dropping the $13 on one of these canvas quick-release straps just to see how they are. Unlike cheap leather, canvas straps are much more likely to break in and be comfortable on the wrist.

Phillips auction house sold Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona for which a collector paid $17,752,500 in 2016.

Now a Rolex GMT Master worn by Marlon Brando in the 1979 Vietnam War classic Apocalypse Now is up for auction at Phillips’ flagship New York watch auction, GAME CHANGERS on December 10th this year.

The watch is described as the most important wristwatch formerly owned by Academy Award® winner Marlon Brando. It’s a Rolex GMT-Master ref. 1675. With its excellent provenance, it’s the watch seen by millions on the wrist of former Green Beret Colonel Walter E. Kurtz, the character played by Brando, and long thought to have been missing.

In addition to its role on the silver screen, the GMT-Master being offered at Phillips is made even more exclusive by the never-before-seen engraving on the case back, “M. Brando,” hand-engraved by Marlon Brando himself.

The watch was bought by Brando in 1972 and remained in his possession until 1995 when he gifted it to his daughter, Petra Brando Fischer. The auction, which will be held this December, which will mark the first-ever public showing of the piece.

According to the watch’s story, told by Phillips, Ms. Brando Fischer recalled him telling her at the time: “This watch is like a tank. You can do anything you want to it and it will keep ongoing. I want you to have it as a reminder of how proud I am of you.”

In 2003, she gave the watch to her husband Russel Fischer, as a wedding present. He has kept it for the past 16 years without fully realizing its value to the wider movie memorabilia and watch collector world.

The sale of the Paul Newman Daytona in 2016 got the family thinking about the watch and they started discussions with auctioneers about putting it up for sale. Phillips has landed the plum piece and a portion of its sale price will go towards funding a new charitable foundation for children suffering abuse, hardship, and neglect.

The watch is a stainless-steel GMT-Master, reference 1675, manufactured in 1972 and said to be in excellent condition but its original strap has been replaced with a rubber strap.

During the problematic production of Apocalypse Now, where filming was held up for months due to a tropical storm in the fishing village of Baler in the Philippines, which destroyed the set, Brando reported for work overweight and unprepared for his role.

Brando was said to have been told to remove his Rolex, but refused, saying, “If they’re looking at my watch, then I’m not doing my job as an actor,” though he did remove the watch’s bezel.

Tampering with any Rolex is normally a disaster for its resale value, but Mr. Brando’s Rolex is likely to attract even more interest because its bezel has been removed.

Paul Boutros, the head of watches for Phillips’ American division says that the watch would be worth around $20,000 without its link to Mr. Brando, but it is likely to be auctioned with a six-figure reserve price. Could it reach the Apocalypse Now production budget of US$31.5 million? Apocalypse probably no.
