Starting in March 2020, UK-based microbrand Firle Watches will be introducing the Sennen, their first-ever timepiece, for purchase via Kickstarter. But since it’s never too early to put a new microbrand on Watchuseek readers’ radar, consider this your official introduction to both Firle and the upcoming Sennen.

Inspired by the Cornish coastline, the Sennen has been designed by Firle’s founder, Will Martin. With a background in industrial design and engineering, Martin’s experience developing products for outdoor adventurers coupled with a passion for mechanical timepieces fueled a desire to create his own watch. In 2016, he formed Firle and three years later, the Sennen was born.

Martin’s approach to watchmaking is a natural one, with the goal of producing timepieces for watch enthusiasts who favor the beauty of the great outdoors. Inspired by the Cornish coastline, the Sennen takes its name from the Cornish cove located on mainland England’s most westerly point, Lands’ End. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, it has been prone to battering from the most extreme weather conditions, resulting in a beautiful, contrasting landscape – an element that’s reflected in the watch itself.

Minimal and elegant in design, the Sennen sports a two-tiered enamel dial with subtle gold hour markers for 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock. The 41mm rounded case – drawing inspiration from vintage pocket watches – is constructed from 316L surgical grade stainless steel and measures 11.7mm thick, and is available in two colors, polished rose gold and polished stainless steel.

An AR coated double-domed sapphire crystal protects the watch and not only allows the dial to be viewed from any angle, but also increases the light luminosity on the dial, creating a radiant effect. Meanwhile, the back of the case features a flat sapphire crystal, which exposes the beautiful inner workings of the modified No-Date Swiss Automatic STP1-11 movement. The Sennen is water resistant up to 100 meters or 330 feet.

Blending classic watchmaking with modern design, every aspect of the Sennen has been meticulously crafted. The dials embody the colors of the mighty Cornish coast, available in navy (pictured), green, black and white. Backers will have the option to choose from two straps: genuine Italian calfskin leather or crocodile-print calfskin leather available in black, navy or brown.

It’s the perfect timepiece for nature lovers who love to escape to the beauty of the great outdoors, or, really, anyone who cares about our oceans, as well as sustainability. £5 will be donated to the charity Plastic Oceans with every sale of a Firle watch; Plastic Oceans is a leading ocean clean-up initiative that aims to reduce the amount of plastic pollution in our water. “As a surfer, the ocean holds a very special place in my heart,” says Martin. “Ultimately, it is a place of great inspiration and reflection. The ocean has provided me with a space to create the framework and the design of Firle Watches.”

Once it officially launches next year, the Sennen will be retailing at £620 — but for a limited number of backers that price will be slashed down to a Kickstarter special of only £380. (That’s a whopping 38% off!) What’s more, the first 100 pieces of each color will be delivered within one month of the campaign conclusion – a rarity in the Kickstarter world.
