If in living out your James Bond fantasies, you’d rather not opt for the more well-trodden charms of an Omega or a Rolex watch, then the new JLC Polaris Date Limited Edition could be the watch to go for. It’s actually more like a James Bond watch than some of the watches the world’s most famous spy has worn throughout the decades.
The launch of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris collection at the SIHH last year was so successful the Polaris line has been extended with this special new creation in a limited series of 800 units.
The Jaeger‑LeCoultre Polaris collection draws its inspiration from the original Memovox Polaris. This much sought-after model was originally developed at the behest of the American market, and was produced between 1965 and 1968. Similarly, this new limited edition is aimed squarely at the North American market.
The original Memovox is everything Bond stands for, hinting strongly of adventure and, at the same time, technical innovation with its groundbreaking amplified underwater alarm function for divers.
The new Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Date has undergone several updates such as shorter lugs, a slimmer bezel, more svelte and ergonomic crowns, and a sapphire glass box crystal.
This particular version of the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Date reveals a new hand-lacquered, blue double-gradient dial with a sunray, grained and opaline finish. It’s unique to this piece and looks utterly stunning, if your favorite color happens to be blue. You will never tire of gazing into the complexities of blue contained within its depths.
This is achieved with an intriguing Bond-style touch; the central disc and main dial each incorporate a shimmering, color-change effect, turning from deep turquoise to a brilliant shade of royal blue.
As for the strap, JLC has carefully matched the blue rubber Clous de Paris band to the rotating inner bezel and it’s unique to this piece.

Traditional JLC Polaris attributes of the dial remain firmly hand applied and in place. These include the elongated Arabic numerals, the trapezoidal hour markers, and the baton-style hands.
With brushed and hand-polished surfaces, the dial is further enhanced by an old school 1960s and 70’s vanilla-tinted Super-LumiNova™ coating, which mimics the Tritium material used back in the day. It covers the markers, numerals and baton hands so as to ensure ease of legibility after dark.
Water-resistant to 200 meters, the Polaris Date Limited Edition is made from stainless steel and has two crowns; one to adjust the time, the other to control the rotating bezel.
The watch is powered by the 899A/1 caliber, a self-winding mechanical movement which delivers all the precision and craftsmanship one would expect from Jaeger-LeCoultre. It has a 38-hour power reserve and is entirely decorated and assembled by hand. The movement accurately keeps track of seconds, minutes, hours, and the date which is found at the 3 o’clock position.
The closed caseback shows four special engravings, including a SCUBA diving insignia, the Jaeger-LeCoultre crest, and the phrase “1000 HOURS CONTROL”, denoting the 1000 hours of testing the watch has undergone prior to leaving the Manufacture in the Vallée de Joux, Switzerland.
The new JLC Polaris Date will sell for US$8,250 and is available as of now online or through the usual North American retail channels starting September 1st, 2019.
