Only Watch comes around once every two years in aid of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This year the auction is set to take place on November 9th at Christie’s Geneva.

Up for auction are 52 novelties, each one of them a one-off, from some of the world’s finest watchmakers. This year’s Only Watch auction is on course to beat 2017’s record-breaking haul of over $12 million dollars.

Not all the watches up for auction at Only Watch are out of reach high-end collectibles. Masters of mid-priced Swiss watchmaking, Frederique Constant, has offered a unique edition of its successful Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Manufacture watch in 18K rose gold. It features a blue tint Meteorite skeleton dial with a heartbeat opening at 6 o’clock, offering its wearer a precious glance at the watch’s complex mechanics.

The Perpetual Calendar Tourbillon Manufacture by FC makes Swiss watchmaking savoir-faire and innovation more accessible. In 2004, Frederique Constant first introduced its own in-house patented manufacture movement; the award-winning Heart Beat Manufacture Calibre. Four years later, the brand unveiled its first in-house manufacture Tourbillon, one of the industry’s most intricate complications based on the Heart Beat Manufacture caliber.

And in 2016, to celebrate the 10th year anniversary of the Frederique Constant manufacture in Plan-les-Ouates, another grande complication was created: the Manufacture Perpetual Calendar; a complicated watch at an accessible price tag.

The movement

The automatic FC-975 movement is equipped with a silicium escapement wheel and anchor. This grand complication also bears a smart weight balance wheel and a delicate and even Tourbillon cage.

FC’s patented Tourbillon cage has 80 components all produced with a precision of 1-2 micron (0.001-0.002 mm). In order to achieve the highest degree of precision, small weights are added in the Tourbillon’s cage to obtain a perfect balance. When the Tourbillon is constructed, the cage’s stability is slightly off, as the escapement wheel and anchor are decentered. A “smart screw” system on the outer edge of the Tourbillon was added to equalize the weight and deliver a perfect balance within the cage, resulting in a more stable amplitude and rate.

The watch

Frederique Constant Meteorite Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Manufacture Only Watch

The 42mm Meteorite Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Manufacture Only Watch model is a unique piece in a 3-part 18K rose gold case with a see-through case back. The watch features a skeletonized blue tint meteorite dial. The meteorite fell to Earth 80,000 years ago and was found in Namibia, Africa in 1839.

The Perpetual Calendar complication displays the day, date and month and requires even fewer adjustments than an annual calendar. Once set, the perpetual calendar will remember the months with 30 and 31 days, the 28 days of February as well as the leap year cycle with the return of 29th of February every four years.

The Perpetual Calendar doesn’t require any manual correction before 400 years, although there is an exception in the Gregorian Calendar, the watch will need to be adjusted on March 1st, 2100. The hour and minute functions are all adjustable through the crown. The dial presents at 12 o’clock for the months and leap year, at 3 o’clock for the days and at 9 o’clock for the weekdays. The tourbillon’s cage sits at 6 o’clock, with its incorporated second’s hand that rotates once every minute.
