First, i want to apologize for my bad english, im Norwegian, so its not my primary language
Seeing some interest in Eterna on WUS lately, i thought i could write a review of my Eterna KonTiki Four-Hands. I have had this watch for four years, and will never part with it, because it was my first quality watch, and i love it
On to the watch:
(note that theese are old pictures, i havent taken any good ones in a while)
The Eterna KonTiki Four-Hands is a modern interpretation of the watch Thor Heyerdahl used on his KonTiki expedition in 1947. I cant find any references for this, but i believe the runes in the middle of the dial are inspired of the Inca Sun-King, and the hour-markers are sunbeams.
Here is a movie about the Eterna KonTiki watches and their connection to Heyerdahls KonTiki expedition:
Specs:
Diameter: 42mm
Glass: slightly bowed AR-coated saphire crystal
Movement: ETA 2836-2
Strap: Oyster styled solid metal bracelet
Wr: 120 meters
Eterna started the ETA movement-factory back in the day, so i think its only apropriate to use an ETA-movement in this watch. The Eterna logo consists of five metal balls. Eterna invented ball bearings for the rotor to reduce friction and introduced it in a watch in 1948, hence the logo.
The logo is also found on the crown:
Dial
The applied markers on the dial gives it a great look, and the edges on the hour-markers reflects light and makes for good contrast to the matte black dial. The finish is absolutely stunning, and is on par with watches much more expensive. The name Four-Hands refers to the fourth hand wich signals the date in a circle on the dial.
Caseback:
The caseback has an engraved picture of Heyerdahls KonTiki balsafleet and looks amazing.
Bracelet:
The bracelet is solid from lugs to clasp, with a brushed finish on the front and back, with polished sides. I find that the brushed finish hides scratches very well. The links have screws on both sides, which makes the bracelet a pain in the ass to size. The clasp is made from a single block of steel and sits flush with the bracelet. The feeling of quality and craftmanship is amazing! Unfortunately there is no divers extention and no holes for finer adjustment, so there is no perfect fit guaranteed! The edges on the links are quite sharp. They are not uncomfortable, but are felt when you are bending your wrist.
Coclusion:
Pros
- Imo beautiful design, with a great historical reference.
- Nice way of showing the date
- Amazing quality and finish, but flies under the radar, because nearly no-one has heard of Eterna.
- The AR-coating is very good, i have had several people asking me if i have lost the crystal on my watch. You almost cant see it
Cons
- No microadjustment on the bracelet.
- The AR-coating looks great, but is prone to scratching. Mine has held up quite good though.
- Poor brand recognition. Depends on who you are, some thinks its a good thing.
I absolutely love this watch. It looks great with a suit and tie, and looks good in jeans an t-shirt. The overall feeling of quality and craftmanship is amazing, considering the price. Some might find the ETA-movement plain and boring, but considering that Eterna started the ETA factory, in some level its like an inhouse-movement
It might be hard to come by, there is not many authorized dealers out there. But if you find one, i really recomend you try one out
Hope you enjoyed the review!
