Hi guys,
first of all I excuse myself for the question that I know has already been asked many times,
but this is going to be my first high end watch and I don't want to get this purchase wrong as we are talking about a great expense.
I am considering the Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5167 on the Rubber strap and the Nautilus 5711 with blue dial on the stainless steel bracelet.
Money is not an issue in my choice.
I would like it to be suitable for almost everyday use (I think both are) but I really can't get my head round this dilemma.
Thank you all very much for your help

This is one of the easier "dilemmas" to overcome for the watches in question are, but for aesthetics, literally the same. Perhaps the most difficult thing about deciding is finding conveniently located sellers who have the models you want in stock. Upon finding such sellers, it's a piece of cake to choose one.

  • Try on the two models that interest you. That should do the the trick, provided you try them on while wearing what you would wear on a typical day.
  • Toss a coin and buy the winning watch. If trying them on didn't solve the "problem," this approach will.
  • Buy the less pricey one because there's no point in spending more money if you truly are indifferent between the two.
  • But the costlier one because spending more money makes you feel better.
Overall, I say handle the matter the same way you would choosing between two food items you like equally but must choose only one when waiter asks for your order. For example, sometimes one wants Armagnac after dinner, sometimes one wants Scotch or port. You can't get your head around the "dilemma" because it's not the sort of thing that can be intellectually decided. Stop trying to think your way to the answer and you'll have no trouble at all choosing. The one that "feels" right in your heart, not your head, when you are in the store trying them on is the one to get.

All the best.

FWIW, I thought I'd like the Aquanaut better than the Nautilus, and with the rubber strap, I do. I prefer bracelets to straps, however, and so I prefer the Nautilus. When I tried to engage my dealer in discussions to arrive at a decent price for a blue faced Nautilus, however, he was unwilling to budge off the MSRP. Such is the demand for that model, I suppose...

I decided to buy neither it nor the Aquanaut, which he was willing to "play" with, as a result. That's just how I am; I refuse to pay full price for regular production, HEWs. My watchie friends think that's bizarre, for readily point out that they and I both know I won't quibble at all over paying full MSRP for modestly priced watches, or other inexpensive things for that matter. It's just one of those things;" I'm not going to try to figure out why I'm that way.

All the best.

I'm not crazy, I'm just drawn that way.

Yeah, blue 5711s don't see discounts very often. I take it you didn't prefer the Aquanaut on bracelet? If you did it would probably work for your inner negotiator, you should be able to get at least a grand off the 5167/1.

I don't, and that's unusual for me. I tried it on, and it looked lovely and felt fine, but I liked what the Nautilus looked like better. Knowing I prefer the Nautilus on the bracelet and preferring bracelets anyway, I just decided I wasn't going to toss $25K at a watch I have no reason to buy beyond self-indulgence (I already have a PP in my collection) and that I would be buying just because I could get a "deal" on it and couldn't get one on the one I prefer.

If I hadn't already "ticked the PP box," I could well feel very differently about it, but the Aquanaut and be immensely pleased with it and that it be my collection's PP "representative," but I have already ticked that box. When I'm buying watches to achieve a collecting goal, I'm willing to be pretty flexible in order to do so. When I'm buying a watch purely because I think it's handsome and I just want it, my sensibilities change. Since I don't have to buy those watches, if I can't get them at favorable prices, I just won't buy them because nothing about my life or hobby will be incomplete without them. The day will come when the dealer wants to make the sale more than he wants to make it at full MSRP. When that day comes, I'll buy the watch. <wink>

All the best.
