Hi,
Im new here and I dont know much about watches. I saw the U-boat watches and really liked it the other day. The problem is that my student budget isnt big enough.
So I would be happy if you guys could recommend brands that sell watches that looks like the U-boat.
I especially like the flightdeck that is all black with green details in the case.
I found a brand called Ingersoll that makes one that looks alot like that one.

Does anyone know about the quality of Ingersoll?
I found an old thread about Ingersoll, but that was a couple of years old so...

I appreciate all help I can get!

I have looked at them and they are nice. Theres just the problem that they dont have any thats all black with the green details.

Otherwise they are really good looking
What about that one ?

it's a different look, of course... but you gain the GMT function ;-)

No, i prefer the versions with cleaner design. But thanks for your tip.

Isnt there any other brand that could have what Im looking for?
Or how is the Ingersoll, quality wise?
About Ingersoll, I couldn't tell, I don't own one.
Using the search function, it seems there's not a lot of folks around here having one

Here's what I've found in the forum about the brand :

But furthermore, I think I've already seen lots of U-Boat alikes everywhere... not so sure about all-blacks, though

Good luck in your seach :)

Just a friendly reminder, as per WUS rule 6:

6 No discussions or pictures of replica watches, or links to replica watch sites unless previously approved by a moderator or the site owner.

Homages are fine, fakes/replicas are not.

Thanks,
Griff

No problem ecalzo, I just thought a friendly reminder would be good for everyone and it wasn't directed specifically to you.

Discussion of homages are fine, fakes are not. I realize there is a fine line between the two, but fakes are just that, copies of the real thing meant to deceive. Homages borrow styling from well known watches but do not copy logos or brand names. Replicas and fakes are illegal and support counterfeiting crime, homages are not illegal.

Thanks,
Griff

yes, a reminder it is always a good thing...

I saw a number of interesting Ingersol watches for sale when I was in Europe this summer, in Rome and in the Munich airport. Seemed like interesting "affordable" watches. Tried searching the brand name here when I got back and didn't find much in terms of info, sales, or interesting models.

For all us history buffs, Ingersoll was essentially the predecessor of today's U.S. Time Corp., aka Timex. They started in the 1800's, supplying watches from Waterbury Clock Company and were one of the early "dollar watch" pocket watch companies. Ingersoll went bankrupt in the 20's and were fully bought by Waterbury, which was then bought by U.S. Time in 1942. There was also a UK division that partnered with Smiths and were made in Wales. That factory closed in 1980. I believe the current Ingersoll is essentially a brand name bought to market Chinese made watches with a "history"

The guys here who are old enough might remember the original Ingersoll Mickey Mouse watches :-d

As far as the new Ingersoll I haven't heard much, either positive or negative. Since current Chinese made watches can be excellent or not so excellent, I would not be willing to spend a whole lot on one or make sure the retailer has a return policy in case it is the latter. I have seen some nice looking models though.

I hope this helps,
Griff

Good info Griff, thanks. I knew I had heard of the brand name and figured it was some sort of revival of the name but didn't know the history. :-!

Digging in the graveyard...

I bought an invicta russian diver and plan on eventually having the case pvd'd and maybe getting a new dial. Close to the U-boat in looks but my own, personal version.
