The title may be confusing, but not really sure how else to word it. I'll explain what I'm looking to do, and what I've tried.

I'm heading out for a 7 day 85 mile hike. I would like to use the watch to track the hike, but I would also like it to notify me within x amount of distance to a set waypoint. We have the GPS coords of possible minimum and maximum camp locations for every day. I'd like to set those in the watch and be notified as we get close.

I downloaded and installed an app from movescount called "Wake Me Up Near My Destination" which is supposed to, according to the description, notify you within 1km of a waypoint (2 beeps) and again within 200 meters (4 beeps). As a test I loaded the app as a display under my hiking activity. Then proceeded to set the coords of two stores I was going to in the watch as POI/waypoints, and set them to be used in the watch. Verified that the app and POI's were active in the watch. Before leaving the house, I got a GPS lock and started the hiking activity with the app I had installed.

I set off on my way and the watch never gave any indication when I was either a km out, or as I was right in the parking lots (well within the 200m area) of either store.

Is there some other way of doing this aside from using an app? I'm leaving for the trip next Friday, so I'd like to get something sorted out by then.

Thanks for any help.

I have not tried that. I'm very new to all the features of the watch. The tracking features are what is most important to me. I haven't tried to do both navigation and hike tracking at the same time, didn't think it was an option. The trail is for most purposes well enough marked that I shouldn't need the actual navigation feature, but there are certain areas overnight camps are not allowed due to private property. That's the main reason for the notification, to make sure we are in a legal area. I'll try to play around with it this weekend, using both the hiking activity and navigation.

100m isn't too close, in fact if the app had worked the way I anticipated it, I would have been asking how to alter it to give me something in the 50-100m notification.

100 m and 50 m (IIRC) are the distances at which you get the "approaching waypoint" and "waypoint reached" notifications when you use navigation - and you can turn on navigation, along a track or (better for your case) to a POI while you are tracking an activity. Just hold the middle button to get into the menu, then activate the navigation you need. It won't show you a map, but the direction to and distance from your destination POI will probably more than suffice for what you're trying to do.

There's probably something helpful among my "Ambit(3) manual" videos - and I've been noticing that the navigation-related videos are by far the most watched ones ;)

Thanks for that link! Bookmarked. That looks like exactly what I'm trying to do. I'll be playing around with it this week to test for sure.

Thanks for making that series of videos. I'll be watching through more of them when I have the time. I just need to get more familiar with the device. It seems that everything I've gone out looking for apps to accomplish so far, has been an actual feature of the watch and I wasn't aware of it.

Thank you for the kind words. I've seen that happen a lot. There are some things which just aren't supported, no matter what - and some that are or have become supported but get forgotten or aren't ever found. I've even seen it happen with people who work at/for Suunto ;)
