Haha. I somehow am picturing this event. Remember that YUGE pig from my previous thread?
Anyway, thanks for the advice. I will take a hammer and chisel and wreck that Auto EL from all my G-shocks...

I turned it on once. I woke up in a ditch with one shoe and an inflatable pig.

Never again.

I have it off on all of my G-shocks. A few of them have been hydro modded so it makes the sensor even more unreliable. Even when my watches weren't modded, I just felt that it wasn't something that was needed. I know where the light button is so it's not that hard.

I own a GW-5000, which I wear often (atomic solar square). I have always had the auto light switch disabled. I was worried it would be a drain on my battery. I also didn't think I would need to read my watch too often during the evening.

The problem is that in very low light situations, it's very hard to read my watch, even with its positive display. I find myself having to manually select the backlight feature 1-2 times per day, more than I had assumed. It's also not so easy to find the button in the dark.

I was wondering how the board feels about the auto light feature, if you have good or bad experiences with it, if it makes sense to enable on a solar watch. Are there a lot of false positives, turning on the light from just random hand movements, needlessly draining the battery? Is it a feature you appreciate, or found to be rather useless, or perhaps even distracting? Any input would be appreciated.... Thanks!
For me the auto lighting feature is a missed opportunity, thank you for asking. I like to keep it ON for the most time, except when sleeping. It could have been great, but it's just average. I love the possibility of having it, including the accidental triggering, but the implementation is lacking. The precise gesture to activate the light is not always natural and ergonomical, as it needs the precise tilt starting from the horisontal position only. Also a big group that could really benefit from it, can't make good use of it, and I mean people with disabilities. I have a friend who has a disability, meaning he can only use his right arm/hand. If I activate the auto light for him on his GA-100, it works fine for him, and then for no reason it automatically disables itself after 6 hours, leaving him with no possibility to enable it again by himself, as it requires 2 hands to press the buttons. Somebody at the Casio Research and Development didn't think it through.
I myself can use both hands, but the auto disabling of the feature irritates me greatly too (I also own a GA-100). I would very much preffer features to be activated or deactivated when I decide them to, not shutting down automatically with no possibility of making it stay permanently on. And they should let me worry about the battery change, I'm a fully grown man, thank you very much.

Auto light disables itself to save battery only in regular battery GS. Just get your friend a solar and the auto light will stay on.
