Re: The 2017 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club.......

Ok I'm officially in. I have 2 watches on the way, that I paid for/committed to in 2016. One should arrive relatively soon, the other in April (or thereabouts).

Thanks Hornet, for getting this going.
You're welcome! Whilst I am on a self imposed purchase ban, this was started as being quite tongue-in-cheek TBH, but the level of interest has surprised me :).

Re: The 2017 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club.......

Can I buy one last watch and then join so that I'd have my excption saved for a rainy day?

Also it's somewhat funny, that about the same time someone has started a topic about the most number of watches bought in a week.
.........this doesn't feel like you're fully committed to the club .

Re: The 2017 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club.......

Yeah I can relate @ the Halios Seaforth, ValueWatchGuy. I've been eyeing it (pastel blue).

I need to unsubscribe from that thread, the 'Heads up' bargain thread, the 2017 new arrivals thread, and I need to delete all of my watchrecon alerts.
First thing that all club members need to do is unsubcribe from threads which could lead to temptation, especially the "Heads up bargain" and watchrecon alerts need to go as well.....

........and that gives me a great idea "Weekly challenges/tips". I think that for this week I'm going to choose one watch and wear it all week and see how that goes.

Re: The 2017 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club.......

I think this is a great idea. While I enjoy buying watches (well, sort of, I actually find it quite stressful) I do regularly stop and think, "What am I DOING?". All these watches.... it's madness. I know there are people with far bigger collections than me but my 12 still seems quite excessive.

So yes, with mutual support, I am going to try to get on the wagon.

OK, the disclosure part - I have an incoming from Stowa expected this week, and a Seiko that has been on order since November 2016. I have my doubts it will ever arrive but you never know.

Is it coincidence most of the "stress" and longing for abstinence is coming from guys in the UK?

Welcome to the club fella!

Interesting point, but no stress from me. It's more down to boredom and a realisation that consumerism is a worm in the brain and I'm happy with the few watches I have. Besides, we Brits love a good moan and tend to congregate wherever there's the chance of being miserable together...

......totally agree with this. No stress here and no lack of funds either.

Re: The 2017 Watch Purchasing Abstinence Club.......

I guess I need to disclose that I currently have two browser tabs open on the Stowa website, along with another tab for a WUS thread about a certain Stowa model. One hour in to my membership of the WPA Club and I don't appear to be doing very well.
........i like the acronym, but you're not setting a good example are you?!

I'm signing on. Went on a shopping spree last year when I discovered the way to buy hassle-free from Japan auctions, ended up buying around 10 JDMs and forming a small thematic collection. There are a couple of pieces I would love to add but it appears they're too rare even for Japan. However I realized that focusing my attention and not binge buying would mean having more funds available for the truly rare pieces up the ladder. So I guess I kinda disappointed myself. Haven't bought anything save a few straps since late December and started selling stuff. Plan to start selling those watches that don't get much wrist time and reducing total watch count from 20+ to half that. I always felt that owning a watch is all about the memories with it on your wrist and a large rotation kinda defeats the purpose. Not sure if having a grail would help, but I don't and that's that.

Here's something that has unexpectedly helped me: I consider myself quite adept with buying from auction sites, now I've stepped across the other side of the fence and started enjoying selling stuff on eBay. I enjoy seeing how many views and 'watchers' I get, writing enticing descriptions for WIS'es and seeing my available funds and PayPal balance rising. I'm selling watches that ain't forum darlings plus getting rid of small stuff I have no use for (straps, bracelets, spare parts) and I wouldn't bother with selling through forum sales corners, just to get a solid reputation as a seller. Plus, cause its mostly niche stuff I got to exchange a few words with fellow WIS, even members of WUS, that end up buying them cause, who else would, you know. Although forum sales corners seem to be somewhat more secure than eBay, I found that bumping the ad, responding to lowball offers or unwanted trade offers is so tiring that I prefer accurately setting up an eBay ad once and just watching how it goes with the metrics.
