Just buy one - I said on another watch forum that the SKX007 on a Jubilee strap is a must have watch...and you can customise to any look :)
Pro's
(1) Bullet proof 7S26 movement - easy to service (& replace if required) - How to repair a Seiko 7S26 Automatic wrist watch
(2) Hundred's and hundreds of mods available on Glass, Dial, Chapter ring, Bezel, Bezel insert, hands and straps. - see Yobokies (yobokies's Library | Photobucket) or Dagaz (***WEB STORE*** - DAGAZ WATCH LTD.)

(3) Good size and easy to read with an excellent lume.
(4) Relatively cheap (I paid about ÂŁ180 - $240 a few months ago) but harder to find new
Con's
(1) Some people don't like the Jubilee strap.
(2) There is no hacking and manual wind - You have to shake it to start and wear it to keep the power reserve up.
(3) Not a very accurate movement
Thanks for sharing those points but especially those weblinks. The modding info is VERY cool. Not sure I would do it myself, but the idea of getting a completely customized watch is very interesting. I really like the look of the domed crystal.
Diving watches are just so cool! I literally just bought a pilot's watch and I think i'm going to sell it for more divers.

So I call my local Seiko AD - ironically where I bought my fiancé her ring and they say that the SRP309 is no longer available.

He suggests an SRP585 which is similar in size and they have one used but still under warranty for $350.

A quick google search shows me the watch new for $200-250...

What da heck

The 2nd gen Monster is an awesome choice! Many of them are harder to find like the SRP309. If you like the look, you may want to consider the readily available SRP315 or SRP315K2 bracelet version.

Tried these on. The SKX175 size seemed to look best. The black strapped SRP777 seemed awful chunky with that wide case, the third didn't look as big with the bracelet. I tried on the 777 again after and thought I could pull it off.

No 007 or monsters in sight. But at least now I have some frame of reference for sizes. [emoji106]

The 007 and the 175 are same size (40.5mm?), same movement, differences in dial, hands, hour markers etc but case is the same size. The SRP is the re-issue tuna at 45mm.
I have the 009, same size as the 175 and 007. I like it. It wears kinda small on my wrist (~7.58") and I'm considering a turtle. The 007 has/is history, so is the 009 which is why I bought it. Good luck, enjoy whichever one you buy.

If you want to own seiko's iconic watch with robust movement then i'll go for skx007 but if you want Japanese watch with upgraded movement with hacking and winding then i'll get the seiko's turtle or even orient ray2, mako2 or mako usa 2 they all offer black dial.

~~~you could buy the SKX007 blind and be just fine...my suggestion would be to buy from Marc at island Watch if he has some in stock...I think I paid $199 for mine from him, with the Jubilee bracelet
IIRC, I'm somewhere around 9 watches right now, all but one are Seiko, and they are all divers=:) You'll find many here that will agree with me when I say your collection isn't complete until you own an SKX007. I have nicer Seikos but the SKX gets worn daily anymore, and I usually wear at least two different watfches every day so one is the SKX and the other is, well another Seiko diver=:)
The thing with the SKX is, it's the kind of watch you'll wear so you won't muck up a nicer watch, and with me, I'm always doing something that will keep me from wearing a nicer watch, hence the SKX gets a lot of wrist time
Seriously, just buy one, and don't get caught up in the hacking/non hacking controversy
Okay, here ya go, SKX-
The answer is yes. But, you really can't take our word for it; you have to experience yourself. I think you will understand why so many (even those with Rolex, Omega, etc.) love this thing. It wears like luxury, but you can beat the snot out of it.
I have the 007's pepsi twin, the 009. I love it to death. The unique case shape and overall design is one of my all time favorites for sure.
I also love the spot of red on the bezel and the navy blue is really subdued.
The only negative thing about mine is that it runs slow (like most i prefer that my automatics run fast instead), but I only need to adjust it maybe once a week, which is how often I re-align all my automatics anyway.
I wear it to work almost every day, where it gets knocked against everything stainless steel imaginable (i work in a kitchen) and it's held up way better than I ever thought it would.
Maybe its time to invest in a Timegrapher? The regulation adjustment is easy to do, just needs the back off and a cocktail stick or small screwdriver
i like my 007, but out of the box it ran -30spd - so i just used the toothpick method, then waited two hours to extrapolate the adjustment... but then i found out that with a cheap Logitech C270 webcam and the free, open-source Tg timegrapher client, i could perform regulation much faster and routinely check on the health of my Seikos and Vostoks - it really helped to confirm a good purchase of a used SRP315 and to diagnose a slow Amphibia
with no need to spend money for a timegrapher for my watches, this freed up some funds for a 175!
Do you think you could provide a little clarity on this for a newbie?
Are these items I can easily find via google? Or are you talking in technerd?
https://www.watchuseek.com/f6/open-source-timing-software-2542874.htmlhere's a screenshot of my SKX007 that i regulated manually using the toothpick, wait 2 hours method, but it shows good results as i got lucky! i usually run the Windblows client version under CrossOver under OS X, but i also recompiled the source for use under the ARM Debian Raspbian distro for the US$35 Raspberry Pi3 - but for those sessions i run the client in a VNC desktop session over my local network - is that 'technerdy' enough? LOL! and actually, it's quite easy to use - you need to know the 'lift-angle' for your auto, its beats per hour, and before using your setup, 'calibrate' the software to your input mic/webcam mic:
this shows the tg timegrapher display dialog in a VNC session on a Macbook Air, with the tg client running on a Raspberry Pi3 (encased in a PiBow case with a 3.5" TFT LCD - the LCD is too small to host the tg dialog - that's why i used VNC as the Macbook has a larger screen); the watch's caseback is held to the webcam's mic, and the C270 is plugged into the Raspberry Pi3; btw, the 'build' under Raspbian was error-free and quite fast - about a minute or so:
you can find the source and more info here (but the link to the WUS thread above is worth a good read)
Good deal. So, you all have convinced me. And/or given me the shove - I'm gonna do it!
I was planning to go amazon since I have prime but I see that Jomashop has them on sale for less ($189.99 w/bracelet) and free shipping: Seiko Divers Automatic Men's Watch SKX007K2 - Diver - Seiko - Watches - Jomashop
Any concerns with using them? I've also seen them on island watch for around the same price if you get the first order discount and free shipping: Seiko Automatic Dive Watch with Stainless Steel Bracelet #SKX007K2
Cheers
I bought my first 007 a few weeks ago off of Amazon. I was very close to using Joma (I also found a $10 code taking total down to $179), but I couldn't resist having it next day. I also bought a StrapCode Super Oyster off of Amazon, and I'm very happy with both.
Very interested to hear about your experience with Jomashop if you end up going that route.
