How much wristwatch do you need?

Almost nothing, answers the Casio F30, probably the humblest in all Casio's wristwatch range in current production: just hours, minutes, seconds, month and date. That's all you need.

And maybe, in these days of digital multi-functions and baroque mechanical complications, the F30 has a point. A point in favor of basics, a point for the simple foundations of timekeeping.

Retaining the legendary Lithium lettering on its bezel, right from the victorious days of the digital quartz revolution, the Casio F30 is a visual tribute to retro trends. Everything says retro in this small and light basic watch: the design, the crystal, the black bezel and strap, the plastic caseback, the simple pins that hold the strap on place and that can be removed with a simple push of a ballpoint pen.

No 24 hours stuff for the F30, a small rectangular indicator let you know when it's the PM part of the day; No light at all, of course; just 2 little square bottons to adjust the settings and to see the month and date if you keep it pressed.

You know you don't need any more, says the F30.

For the forum's Casio digital current and vintage community, I share these comments and a few photos.

Meet the F30, Casio's humblest. :)

@ Sjors,

Yes indeed, Sjors. It's so basic that it's amazing. As a matter of fact, it baffles me. I got it for free when I bought a G-Shock G2300. Once in a very while I wear it, just to tell myself: "Man, ain't I cool?" :)

@ Mansrow,

Once you take the pins off, the caseback can be opened. One more of its simple design hues: the caseback can't hold by itself to the watch. :)

Mmmmm. This was the first Casio watch I bought (my first watch as well). I bought it for 7.5$ when I was 8. I gave it to someone after a couple of years having it, but that guy lost it recently. The watch is extremly light as you hardly feel you're wearing it. It was working perfectly on its original battery after 12 years!

An achievement of simplicity, thanks for your mini-review ;-)

I picked one up recently last week at the local flea-mart for under US$2! Just popped in a new battery and it worked fine. It's a bare-bones watch - just time and date functions. As to the WR, I wore it in the shower and it passed with flying colors ( or is it waters?) For sure it feels extremely light and comfy on the wrist and the crisp, clear display makes for good legibility though the digits are not very large. Here's a pic of it:

A fond favourite of mine is the F105, simple module like the F91 with an illuminator back light. I wore this watch all day every day for a whole month, at work, at home, in bed, in the shower. Not a single problem and tougher than they look, the the plastic face does get scratched quite easily but not bad for a $15 watch.
