Hi all. I have my fathers inscribed SG that was given to him by IBM for 25 years service back in 1992. Unfortunately he never wore watches much and left it in the box all these years. I took to a watchmaker to have a battery put in and the old battery had melted I guess and gummed everything up. They tried to clean it and free up the movement. It was determined that they could not. He left a fresh battery and one day it began to run and keep good time. Now it has quit again and the battery is less than a year old. I am assuming it needs a new movement. If the local person can not do that where should I send it off to? Authorized Concord Service Center? Also do you have any idea how much that should cost or is it something I can do myself if I can find a movement for it? I am willing to put what I need to to save it for obvious reasons, but don't want to muck it up. Thank you.

Installing a new quartz movement isn't difficult, but if you have no experience then I wouldn't recommend it. Care is needed when removing the movement from the case, removing the hands and dial from the movement, then cutting the new movement stem to the correct length, reattaching the crown, putting the dial and hands (in the correct place) back onto the movement and then the movement back into the case.

Not a big job for a professional, but probably best left to a professional. If the watch has sentimental value, and it's something you would wear in the future, I would consider sending it back to Concord for a clean and movement replacement.

If it was working for nearly 12 months I'd recommend having a new battery installed as the "freeing up" of the movement could have drained the battery and a new one may cure it. In any case it's much cheaper than a new movement.

Good luck

That is a good thought. I will take it in again for a new one and let you know. Thanks.

If you are in the USA, Concord watches are serviced by MGI Service in New Jersey. (www.mgiservice.com). I have had consistently good experience with their service center. Their full-service charge is $180 and will probably include a replacement movement in any case. You might find an independent who can do it for less.

MGI is the Movado Group, which has owned Concord since 1971.

So I took it to a local guy this am that looked at it on the spot. He said the electronic circuitry was toast from the corrosion and that maybe it made contact enough to run for a while. He is going to try to find the circuit, but if unable will do the whole movement. Quoted $135 to $225 depending. I figured since he is local and I could drop it right here that is fine. Hopefully he can find the circuit. Thanks everyone.

I have a similar situation. What did you ever do to fix watch? Did you send it to Movado/Concord for repair or do something else?
