I ran a compass over the watches on my desk and...either my apartment is built on an ancient 'Indian' burial ground or my watch-stand is too close to the external PC audio speakers. Guess i'll have to pick up a cheap de-magnetizer. Still, being a belligerent f***er i'd rather not move my speakers or my watch-stand so I was wondering, are there any decent, affordable watches with anti-magnetic properties?

It would need to be...

  • Under £1000 (a lot under, preferably) so, no Omega, Nomos, Damasko, Mont Blanc..etc....etc
  • Automatic movement
  • In production or easily available
Come on, let's see 'em!

Something like this but more available (in the UK) would be nice

Afaik all watchers that pass the diver-watch iso (forgot the number, but all of seiko's divers with "DIVER'S 200m" printed are included) should be somewhat magnetic-resistant, to 4800 am (or whatever the units were).

A demagnetiser costs ~$10. Moving your speakers is cheaper still.

I have just this last week decided to sit my new 4" speaker on top of my watch box and I am sure it won't affect any of my watches in the least. I think the problem is supposed to be that the hairspring becomes SO magnetic that it sticks to itself, and I just cannot see this happening unless I rub them directly against the driver. Inverse square laws and all that, there's at least 6" between the magnet and a watch, and they all seem fine so far.

They don't need to be so magnetic so as to stick to themselves. Even being somewhat magnetized will result in eddy currents as the hairspring coils and uncoils, and these affect the physical behaviour of the spring.

4800 A/m isn't a lot. A speaker will easily exceed that. It's the strength of your typical refrigerator magnet. I actually think most modern watches meet or exceed this anyway.

I'm kind of a "belligerent f***er" myself and I say, move the f***ing watches. Anyone who addresses a problem by initially disqualifying the most logical course of action deserves what he/she gets in-the end.

As far as watches go, My Ball has proven that it can survive my two young boys and their collection of magnetized toys. I have a $10 de-magnetizer for the rest of my collection.

Good luck!

I believe a standard ETA 2824 movement has a mag resistance of 4800 Am.

Additional magnetic field resistance can be added by shielding the movement with a soft iron layer, often embedded into the case, and a thicker dial to shield it from the front.

My Sinn EZM-3 is rated for 80,000 Am and in the past I've owned an anti-mag 656 and a Kazimon Eins.

If your movement becomes magnetized you'll know right away. The most obvious symptom is that it'll start running very fast (minutes a day).

I'm going to be the elephant in the room. Aren't most quartz antimagnetic?

Yes and no. Not in a way that would assist OP if he wants to put his watches on top of magnets.

They are not susceptible to becoming magnetized (continued effects after removing from the magnetic field), but they can be impacted by a magnetic field. In other words -- both a quartz and a mechanical can become inaccurate while in a magnetic field; the quartz will recover after removal, but the mechanical may need to be demagnetized. "Buy a quartz" therefore doesn't solve the problem, unless OP wants to reset his quartz watches every time he wears them. (Although I don't know if proximity to a speaker is actually enough to impact a quartz movement).

Perhaps they could be found below that limit used.

Sidenote:

Asp Explorer!! Cool. Have you made the trip to Saggitarius A* and back? If you can find the time, it's really worth it (though it is quite a marathon).
For sure but if im paying over £300 I want AD-type service (reliability, no-worries refunds...etc) |>

I went to Colonia and while i'm glad i made the effort (bagged some ELW's and a f***-ton of water worlds), tbh it was boring as hell on the way back. Will probably head out to Sag A when I've forgotten how dull and repetitive the journey gets :-d :) o7
