Trying to get my wife her first nice watch. Obviously the Rolex will hold its value better, but I really want the watch she will enjoy more. She is not a 'watch person' so the history of the brand, quality of the watch, etc, will not matter to her. She can not choose on her own so I probably have to decide for her. I want to get her the one that will get her compliments from her friends but not be so flashy that everyone just sees diamonds and comments. Both are size 36. The Rolex is steel with gold bezel, the Cartier is all steel. The Rolex is more expensive but price can come down with roman numeral markers instead of diamonds.

I gave my wife a rolex lady datejust first, then a medium cartier tank next (on a leather strap). She seems to wear the tank more than the rolex. There’s a lot of history in the tank and the women who wore them (jackie kennedy comes to mind). You can get either of them for around 2-3k used. Show her some choices and ask her what she likes.

Appreciate responses. Neither of us like the Tank. She has tried on both the Datejust and the Ballon Bleu and likes them both. However, she is not able to decide which she likes best. She never would of considered getting something until she saw me get a Nautilus and love wearing a high end watch. I like the Rolex but I think the Cartier with Roman Numerals is actually less 'flashy' and is more like jewelry, and she will like that better. Obviously both are great.

My wife likes Cartier jewelry and hates their watches.

She would prefer Rolex out of every brand because as a non watch person she knows it is quality.

If your wife is not a watch person, then I would humbly suggest that instead of surprising her, I would take her out to a nice brunch, and discuss that you'd like to take her to pick out a watch befitting her stature in your eyes or some similar bracelet jewelry to adorn her wrist. Empower her to choose what she wants. Ultimately, you will rack up double brownie points and minimize your risk of being the "oblivious husband."

If shes she's not a watch person, consider yourself lucky. You'll save a lot of $. My wife was a "shoe person" and has become a shoe and watch person since meeting me..:)

i will suggest that when she wears the Rolex, I think "nice watch"...similar to mine and lots of other people.

when she wears the Cartier (not as often), I think "stunning"

in our case, neither of us wanted diamond versions.

the Rolex/ no diamonds is more of go (almost) anywhere. The Cartier is really special.

hope this is helpful to you both in coming to a decision.

Cartier for sure. With different DJ dials/metals, maybe different result.

Anyway, whatever she wants is the right answer.
Agree with the above. Although she didn't like Tank, you might also consider a JLC Reverso and other women's models -- my SO preferred the Reverso to all of the above, although she's also less inclined toward lots of diamonds on her watch.

However, if your wife isn't into watches and doesn't prefer one or the other, maybe it's time to ask yourself if she really wants either? An expensive watch isn't something to force on someone / could mean more watch funds for your next purchase :)
