I am looking for a watch that is extremely thin, preferably under 10mm if possible. I really like the looks of some of the Frederique Constant Classics and am drawn in by their beautiful designs and 5mm case but I would prefer it to be automatic if at all possible. I may just go with the quartz which isn't the worst thing since they really are nice looking watches. I should also mention that I would like the case to be gold and the strap to be 20mm.

My question is, can you even find automatic dress watches that are under 8mm to 5mm thick for less than $1000USD?

I appreciate any help!

If manual wind is acceptable, Christopher Ward has the Malvern 595 (5.95mm thick) in rose gold (PVD plated gold over steel). They're having a sale right now, so with the discount code it would be <$600.

Hamilton Intra-matic is just under 10mm thick and retails just under $1000.

A Christopher Ward C5 Malvern 595 that retails for $890 and is just under 6mm thick with a 20mm lug. And wow for that discount mentioned above ^.
The only thing is that it is a handwinder. The problem you have is that automatics are thicker because it needs the space for the rotor. You may be able to get an ultra thin automatic movement but it would be in-house and the cost would be much more than the sub $1000 you are wanting and moving into Piaget and Bulgari territory. At this price point it's all ETAs and Miyotas. That said, ETA does make a really thin automatic under 4mm called the ETA 2000-1 but because it's 20mm wide, it's mostly used for women's watches.

noooooooooooo please don't go with the Quartz.
Blancpain have some lovely 38mm-40mm ultra thin Villeret stainless steel watches that are just pieces of history. it is by far one of the best deals
a second option would be a JLC MC sector dial
but please don't go quartz, you will regret it for the end of your life :)

Actually, now that I have done a little more research, hand wind might be preferable. I love everything that Christopher Ward so thank you for turning me on to hand wind.

Thank you for your enthusiasm, haha, unfortunately all of your suggestions are much too far out of my budget. I would really prefer something other than quartz but it just seems most choices that are as thin as I want and within my budget are quartz. I might be able to find a hand wound watch that fits all my criteria, though.

Hey sorry i miss read your budget, i thought it was 4 zeros rather than 3 zeros.
Well if you stretch your budget a little you could get a new Nomos which would make an awesome dress watch for the range you are looking for. I have seen some of them on special offer at certain times as low as 1200
