Does anyone know of a small gadget that was traditionally used in movie production that was similar to a watch?

I remember an advertisement in a old copy of Popular Mechanics that showed a man smoking a cigarette or something to do with the product, but he had this neat looking gadget hanging around his neck from a cord. Behind him were cameras and sets and a director's chair. Unfortunately I don't remember much about what the gadget looked like. Just some kind of polished steel complication, possibly with digits or some kind of gauge.

It may have been a loup-like device that mimicked the camera lens, with the ability to stop the lens down or up so he could envision the scene, looking through it, as it would be recorded...or something like that

It's a light meter... just measures brightness at a given point, giving the cinematographer/camera operator a reference for setting the iris and shutter angle to best capture the scene based on whatever stock they're shooting (or digital iso equivalent)

Same operating principle as the round one posted above, just new tech.
