Hi all,

I am getting really into the tank and tonneau shapes for a dress watch.
It is not a category I know a lot about…

As much as I would love a Cartier, unfortunately I have to be realistic with my budget.
What would you recommend me around $500 ?
Quartz or mechanical. Preferably leather strap.
Wrist size ≈ 7 inches.

Thanks for your input !

There are tons of either restored or genuine Art Deco watches you can find from American brands on eBay, I found a great vintage Hamilton Boulton in 2018 I think that I enjoyed very much for a while and it was like 120 bucks. Try looking up vintage rectangular watch on eBay and see what you find.

The Oris Rectangular is back and man, they look sharp and are in a good, compact size. Problem is they are about $2000 USD but they're automatic and bang for buck, I'd say they beat anything Cartier currently has:

Hamilton Boulton. Can be had on the gray market for around $500.

But more realistically for your budget, there is the LIP T18 "Churchill" for about $200. Revived French company making watches with Asian parts but this one is powered by a Swiss quartz movement. I think when a quartz is powering a small seconds hand, the effect is decent. Story behind this watch model is that in 1948, the French gave Winston Churchill a T18 watch as a thanks for the services he rendered in WW2. It's a nice looking piece if you like Arabic numerals more than Roman or indices:

They also do a minimalist version and a slightly bigger version called the T24:
