Hi everyone,
Have anyone bought watches from creation watches Singapore to India? I want to buy a Orient kamasu and it's significantly cheaper that the official Orient india price. The only thing is import duty by Indian customs. DHL express prepaid is 61% of the watch itself. Is it possible to avoid import duty if bought by standard shipping?

Yes I have bought tonnes of watches from creationwatches and over the years the customs dept has become extremely aggressive in levying customs. Its about 50 to 60% of the label/invoice value and then if the customs dept finds something amiss, they'll end up going for their own assessed value of the watch. It's a flat 50 to 60% using DHL. Make sure you provide your kyc details along with personal details on the DHL kyc and customer portal ASAP or the package goes into holding and demerrage charges will be applicable, to be paid to DHL.

Earlier Creationwatches offered registered shipping options without the box which took upto 15 working days to deliver and one could avoid customs but that's not possible anymore. All packages are opened, checked and assessed by the customs. Although there's a slim chance you'll pay slightly less duty on the watch using EMS/registered shipping.

That's really awful to hear about the taxing of imported watches.

Since when are courier companies allowed to collect taxes on items?

I left India in 1984, and even back then, there were some really strange practices that I was aware of.

So the courier companies collect customs fees on behalf of the customs dept and usually have a customs dept approved clearing agent for assessment. The customs dept offcourse recover the funds from the courier companies.

This is interesting. Here in Canada when I shipped from the US, the Canada Post made me pay before handing over the items.
