DWH5600 notifications / heart rate issues

Whelp - against most of the posts here and a lot of peoples advice- I went ahead and picked up the DWH5600. It synched with my phone fine, but none of the notifications work, and all the “activities” is greyed out on the watch ( even though they are all active via the app on my iPhone ). It doesn’t sense heart rate, steps, nothing. Time, stop watch, and timer are the only thing that works.

it does need a software update that I haven’t gotten around too yet so I’m hoping that will fix all the issues. Plus the watch only has one bar on its battery status indicator. But - according the the manual at least - all the functions are supposed to be working even on one bar of battery of the watch.

I’m thinking it’s the software update issue causing all of this. Anyone else have this same issue ? Right now the watch won’t even display sunrise / sunset, heart rate, blood oxygen, etc etc even though all of these functions are turned on via the app. The phone is also showing that it’s synced with my watch since the watch is displaying the “Bluetooth” symbol. So - not sure what’s going on there why nothing works with the watch.

Buttons are as expected ( very small and difficult to use ), but I absolutely love the MIP screen. It’s also a shame that this watch does not have an hourly chime.

On the plus side - this watch is super comfortable to wear. I have a 7.5” wrist and I’m on the 9th hole in and there’s still 7 holes to go on the strap. The rubber strap, speaking of, is super comfy and soft like the GW5000 - just with a bunch more holes to get a perfect fit. I love this feature about the band.
The interface is a bit different but doesn’t take too long to get used to IMO. Love how it has so many features packed into this little watch. Also - zero issues with leaving marks on my wrist, and no issues with it being too heavy since it’s over 17MM tall. Love its looks, just wish all the functions worked haha

After work today I’ll throw it on the charger and do the software update and report back here tomorrow with my results. I think once everything works, this will be my new EDC watch. I even wear my watch to bed too so I look forward to its sleep functions too.

Whelp - turns out the watch will not update the firmware until it reaches 2 bars of battery. Successfully updated the firmware and now the heart rate, step counter, and all the health apps now work again. However - the notifications still doesn’t work. When I get a phone call, after I already answer my phone the watch then senses the notification but other than that, that’s all it does. Doesn’t tell me when any text messages comes in, no email messages, no missed calls, nothing.
I tried unpairing / repairing it again, tried shutting my phone ( iPhone 14 Pro Max ) off and on again, nothing works. Still no notifications.

I’ll keep it another day or 2 and see if things change if not - it’s going back.

You need to charge it to full for all functions to work properly.
You may have some other issue/s with the watch, but i suggest to call Casio support.
It will serve you better and may lead to actual resolution of the problem on your specific phone/app combo. Or, may be, in broader model firmware update.
Not so recently i had bought Sony BT speaker. Which was somehow amusingly defective in BT department.
I did call Sony and reported issues i seen, before returning for refund to BestBuy.
Hopefully Sony will fix it for other people.
If you won't report problems for manufacturer there is no way they will know about them and fix them.
Even if you decided to get rid of specific model call them and talk to them.
We, on the forum, won't fix these things.
I also suggest to post your observations in app store reviews. Developers do read them and respond to them.

I let the watch charge overnight now the battery is on “high” with all bars. The app then decided the watch needed yet another firmware update. So - it did that successfully. Still - zero notifications. I tried turning notifications on / off via the watch itself, resetting the app etc. I’m done. This watch is going back this week.

Edit - I found something very interesting about this new firmware update. So - when you press any of the buttons the backlight now turns on by itself so you can see the display. There’s nothing in the settings to turn that feature off / on ( and yes - auto light is off ). Also - THERE IS NOW AN HOURLY CHIME !!!! This is the first MIP watch that Casio makes to my knowledge that now has an hourly chime ! Might keep it a few days longer and keep playing with it to see what else it can do. Can’t believe they listened to customers and put an hourly chime on this thing !

Also noticed that the backlight on the DWH5600 is on all the time when you press any button. Light stays on for either 1.5 or 5 seconds and as far as I can tell - there no way to turn off the backlight with button press. Also - when the hourly chime / alarm sounds - the backlight also flashes. Like flash alert from a standard gshock. I like this watch more and more now I just wish notifications worked. Oh - phone calls are the only notifications that now work on my watch. And yes - the battery is now fully charged.

Ok - another update -

all is fixed !!! I love this watch now !
So - in order to get text messages ( and really any message alerts, Emails etc ) you have to go ( for iPhone users only ! ) under settings, notifications, then go into messages. Down under “Lock Screen Appearances” should be set to “always” for “show previews”. Mine are all set to “never”.
This is really good since you can now do this for emails and anything else. If you don’t want it to display on the watch, just go into it and change it to “never”.
So no everything is perfect. Everything works as it should. Plus with the addition of the hourly chime - this is the best Casio watch yet. Sure it has its faults ( small buttons, etc ) but it does everything I want it to and then some.

With few things omitted it is close to best Casio in past few years if not decade. Considering next big thing was GPS, BT and 3d gen ABC back about 10 years ago. I think it decade. Glad it worked out.
But for best Casio watch i vote f91!

Another cool thing about the hourly chime is it actually shuts off during your set “nighttime” so when you’re in bed trying to sleep - the hourly chime is deactivated until the AM. I found that amazing too. There was only one other Casio watch that had this feature ( that strange looking square watch from years back forgot the exact model of the watch ).
I also compared the steps to my iPhones and it was almost spot on. So far - very impressed with this watch. Also - it didn’t miss a beat with text messages either. All of them got sent to my phone throughout the day.

Not only that, on the gshocks that do have mute enabled the light only stays on for the duration of the backlight once a button is pressed. After that, you have to press the light button again and keep pressing buttons in order the keep the light on.

On this DWH5600, it comes on any time you press a button. No need to even mess with the backlight button. Much more handy this way IMO
