I respect your opinion. But I think it’s the datejust that is the quintessential Rolex piece.
Interesting. I'm not sure where I stand on that. It's clearly either the Datejust or Sub. I'll assume Rolex has produced more Datejusts than Submariners over the years (they were also introduced almost a full decade earlier than the Sub), so they are likely more ubiquitous. Add to that it's infinitely more common to see a female with a Datejust than a Sub. BUT...no watch's design/elements of design has been faked/copied/homaged more than the Sub.

Maybe in this context it is indeed the Datejust that is the quintessential Rolex, but perhaps the Sub is the most iconic.

Just a thought.

Even if it has been said that the Sub itself copied/adapted another design? :)

Lots of other manufacturers make versions of a dive watch that look a lot like the Submariner. People tend to look at all these watches as divers.

The Datejust on Jubilee is so iconic, the imitations make people think about how much it looks like a Rolex facsimile.

To me, that is the difference. The Sub looks like a diver. A Datejust looks like no other watch. It is uniquely Rolex.

I only learned about Sub much later in life. Grew up in Asia, the face of Rolex is DateJust. People talks about uncles wearing flashy gold Rolex, immediately I have gold DateJust in mind, not a gold Submariner. However Submariner design greatly influenced the industry, I just remember wearing my Sub and checking out Seiko SPB383, I actually feel it is more luxurious than my 5digit sub but sub got its merits, thin and comfort it is hard to beat. Most divers on market build too big, too thick or too heavy. Hallow links of sub although might be outdated or sound cheap but it does reduce weight.

Eh. The sub is boring at this point and it’s not even the subs fault. It looks like every generic black dial diver in the past 30 years. I have had them in hand and I just do not see it. I was bored before I handed it back.

there are Rolex’s I would want. But this isn’t on the list for even close the to the money it would take to acquire one.

well, I wanted a diver but I also wanted something that didn't look like a submariner (then later on I bought myself a Steinhart ocean one Vintage which looks like the earliest Submariner) so I bought myself a Seiko SUMO SPB101J1

the ocean one vintage might be mistaken for a very early '50 Rolex but it is much bigger that the submariner was back then

the look is very distinctive and cannot be mistaken for a submariner

a lot of people must've realized by now, that you're mostly paying for the brand name when you buy a Sub.

i wouldn't wear one because the brand attracts too much attention, and i think it's too expensive for a watch that's supposed to get wet and get banged around.

there are many other interesting dive watches that are relatively easier on the budget. there's Doxa, Oris, Favre-Leuba, IWC, Breitling, even Ulysses Nardin. And of course, Seiko.

Or if you’re lucky, it’s not just the Sub that gets wet and banged. ;)

Really? I always figured it was the Daytona? :)

If the Sub came as a Chronograph, maybe it would be more interesting to me. But then it would be a Breitling or VC or some brand that does that sort of thing. But maybe I want one and don't know it. No, it's a great looking watch - elegant and substantial all at once, but not my style. Exp 2 white dial would be my next Rolex, if ever.

All this talk of watches and now I read that Ozzy Ozborne has passed away. Damn. :( Perspective.

I think a no date Sub is a legitimately good looking watch. With that being said it's hard to see me owning one as I would most likely choose something more unique or specific to me if spending that kind of money. We'll see if my taste changes over time.
