Since getting bit by the Doxa bug, I thought it would make sense to read a Clive Cussler/Dirk Pitt book before actually buying a limited edition watch based on such novels. The only problem, too many to choose from! I thought about starting from the beginning, but in my experience action books from the 1970s don't always come off as exciting in the new millenium. Any recommendations from the forum?

While you are right that the earlier books aren't as complex as the later ones, it is best to start at the beginning to watch the characters develop. This is the order recommended by most Dirk Pitt fans;

Pacific Vortex (1983)
Mediterranean Caper (1973)
Iceberg (1975)
Raise the Titanic (1976)
Vixen 03 (1978)
Night Probe (1981)
Deep Six (1984)
Cyclops (1986)
Treasure (1988)
Dragon (1990)
Sahara (1992)
Inca Gold (1994)
Shockwave (1996)
Flood Tide (1997)
Atlantis Found (1999)
Valhalla Rising (2001)
Trojan Odyssey (2003)
Black Wind (2004)

While 'The Mediterranean Caper' was published first, 'Pacific Vortex' was the first Dirk Pitt story that Dr. Cussler wrote, so you really should start there. Remember to take into account when the books were written as some of the stories will seem dated.

Good luck and happy reading :-! !

BTW, my favorite was 'Atlantis Found'

I echo Jeremy's suggestion. It's really cool to see the development of CC as a writer, from fairly simple single-plot stories to very complex multi-plot stories. While it isn't strictly necessary to read them in order, very often there are minor references in later books to things that happened in earlier ones, and you would miss these if you skipped the earlier ones. HOWEVER, if you're bound and determined to start in the middle to 'get your feet wet', I personally would recommend 'Valhalla Rising'. This is a prime example of his writing style. Of course, 'Inca Gold' or 'Sahara' would also do, and these are 2 of my favorites.

Whichever way you go, you're in for one helluva fun reading ride! :-!

I'm a new Clive Cussler fan. I read Black Wind first, then Atlantis Found, and am now reading the Mediterranean Caper. I'm sure there are advantages to reading the books in order, but its not nearly as important to do as with a Tom Clancy novel for example - so far, I haven't found too many references to past events that make me feel lost or at a disadvantage in the current story. So far, they're all easy reads and actions packed from the beginning. And I've bought two watches as a result, including a brand new 750T Professional, Clive Cussler edition.

You probably had to use that band; the original surely must have died after being frozen and flame-broiled. :)

As for Cussler books, I've enjoyed every one of them. Honestly, I'd go for the hardcovers while you still can. Amazon has each one from Atlantis Found forward in the Bargain Bin (about $7.99 each). You can find the others through BN.com's used book search engine, granted they get prohibitively expensive from Deep Six and earlier (I managed to buy back to Raise the Titanic, but the first three books are a bit much in the hardcover binding).

As for quality of story, if you don't want to start at the beginning, I'd go from Dragon onward (first book of the 1990s). The problem with the last two, Trojan Odyssey and Black Wind is that they focus on Pitt's kids, so they are less like a true Dirk Pitt adventure.

However, as has been said, the early books are small in comparison to the later ones. You could probably get through the first six in a week or two of regular reading. They get to be appreciably longer starting with Deep Six.

Sahara is my favorite! The movie was okay but was missing a very important part of the plot. Next I think Iceberg. Then Inca Gold. I hold the movie Raise the Titanic with Richard Jordan as Dirk Pitt as the catalyst for reading Dr. Cussler's books.

For us we do not have a favorite. We like them all. Just keep writing Mr. Cussler and we will keep buying and reading. Then once we are done reading we donate the book to Sandra's home town library. It is a small town of less than 1,000 in Iowa.

Speaking of Cussler books, just found out the next in the Pitt series is due to be released beginning of December, called 'Treasure of Khan'.

He also has a western novel coming out this year, possibly in the summer, called 'The Chase'.

And finally a children's book called 'The Adventures of Vin Fizz' will be out next week!

Dr Cussler has been a busy, busy writer........! :-!
