TOKYO, July 8, 2013 - Casio Computer Co., Ltd., announced today the release of a new addition to the PRO TREK line of outdoor watches. The PRG-270 combines high performance and operability, and comes in five color options.

PRO TREK is a line of outdoor watches equipped with a Triple Sensor for determining compass bearing, atmospheric pressure/altitude, and temperature.

The new PRG-270 features significantly improved usability, thanks to the adoption of Casio latest Triple Sensor Ver. 3, offering greater measurement accuracy. In addition to extending the compass bearing continuous measurement time from 20 to 60 seconds, the time required to measure altitude has been reduced from 5 seconds to 1 second, and the altitude measurement unit has been improved from 5 meters to 1 meter. An alarm function has also been added to warn of a sudden rise or fall in atmospheric pressure, ensuring the wearer can be informed the moment that weather conditions begin to change.

The enhanced usability of this outdoor watch is also apparent in its ease of operation. The large light button and the "direct button," for displaying compass bearing, atmospheric pressure/ temperature, and altitude, can be operated without taking gloves off. Furthermore, the readability of the watch has been increased with the addition of increment marks around the large LCD watchface, useful for taking a compass bearing or measuring difference in atmospheric pressure.

Equipped with the Tough Solar™ power system, the new PRG-270 offers the functions and operability needed by those that enjoy outdoor adventure.

Well now, I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said I'm consumed by desire. Maybe Father Christmas will be generous this year...

Thanks for the heads-up, starscream1017!

I like where Pro Trek's are going in terms of size and weight, but is it just an optical illusion how small the LCD looks relative to the bezel? I thought the bezel-to-LCD ratio was already off on the PRW-3000 which has a much smaller bezel diameter, but here the ratio is even worse.

The colors are great, though, and I hope they come up with even more colors as the model progresses. I am not so convinced of the practicality of a negative display on a hiking watch (unless it is from the latest generation as on the GD-350 and the Bluetooth watches), but I guess many people will buy the watch as a fashion statement only so it wouldn't matter much for them and, in fact, it would be a plus.

To answer GEO_79's question: No, it appears that the PRG version will not be atomic, but if history repeats, then we can expect a PRW version soon enough at least for the Japanese market (maybe a PRW-2700?).

The band looks similar to the PRG260 which felt cheap when I tried it on. If someone likes a "busier" watch with the new v3 system then this is the watch for them. I'm happy with my 3000. Thanks for the info Star :)

I'm out of the ProTrek business, but I admit this one has me tempted. Looks like they fixed everything that was wrong with my PRG-130: the set button is not right next to the light button and improved the alti-baro module (to 1s/1m). If they also did fix the loose (to the point of being useless) compass ring they have a winner.

I can only hope that the to-be-released Rangeman comes with the "Triple Sensor Ver. 3"

Don't wanna spoil your party pal, but it is as likely as an altimeter lock in the next years...

cheers

Thanks for the info Starscream :-!

I seems to be clearly a PRW-3000 without atomic. That's could be fine for no reception area and to get that new triple sensor for less money.
Nice that the sunrise and sunset feature is still included.
Also I love the shape, it seems bulkier than the PRW.

Will the digital ring miss as for the PRW ??

Don't be surprised though if it is with the v3 sensors. In the pictures of the Rangeman, it shows "baro" in the right hand corner. This is the same setup that the PRW3000 has when the storm alarm is activated.

So you never know...

This may strike one as pure semantics, but I don't feel comfortable thinking of the PRW-3000 and the PRG-270 as simply the atomic and non-atomic versions of one and the same watch. I see them as quite different models that only happen to share the 3rd generation of sensor technology. I assume that most if not all future Pro Trek watches will all benefit from the new technology. If CASIO would make a watch that looks precisely like the PRW-3000, but with its atomic feature disabled, then I would definitely agree that those two watches are just versions of each other: the full version and the "neutered" version :)

atomic time version of prg 270 is already out ,its prw3000.and yes prw 3000 is more compact that prg 270.prw case dia is 47 mm while prg 270 case dia is 52mm ,prw is thinner too at 12 mm compared to 14 mm for prg270

Talking about displays, I would be more interested in Pro Treks if the charts weren't relegated to a tiny matrix. I don't mind it at all on the 9200 Riseman, but I think how Suunto make the whole display a matrix is much better for a proper ABC. Pro Treks feel like watches with ABC functions tacked on, Suuntos feel like ABCs with a time function tacked on!

Full matrix LCD is nice, but with a round screen like the Protrek, I think the mixed usage of matrix and digits is acceptable.

Well as a big fan of the traditional ProTrek looks I say this is a much more ProTrek-y looking watch than the new 3000. I turned away from the 3000 because it just didn't look geeky enough, but this 270 is far more like it.

Couldn't give a monkey's about functionality in truth, I wear'em because of how they look and to satisfy the inner button-presser in me.

Grey and Blue would be my pick until I've seen the neg display in the flesh.

Massive thumbs up from me.
