My 6 month old Seiko has developed a rattle. When you shake the watch you hear (and feel) something moving about. Movement is not affected. Took it to my local Seiko dealer, they opened the watch and said they would check. Got the watch back a week later with no change, "it was part of the charging mechanism and it can't be helped"

Needless to say I'm not impressed, I'm guessing this is not supposed to happen in a precision tool...Any ideas? Are these watches known to make a sound?

Unfortunately it's a fact of life.
These watches are not(compared to top tier models) considered precision tools. The movements in them are the entry level 7s26 which is currently the least expensive calibre that Seiko makes for a men's watch.
The noise from the auto winding system varies across the board with some being quiet and others being noisy with most falling in between.

If the dealer didn't find anything unusual then it comes down to the ball bearings on the winding rotor. Specs for these seem to be quite liberal.

If it's 6 months old and still under warranty, you can "roll the dice" and see if you can get warranty service with Seiko. You may end up getting a new movement with a quieter rotor. Or they may actually find and fix the problem.

Thats kind of strange, every 7s26 ive seen has been about the same in terms of loudness. I wonder if the rotor is loose, because I had one like that that sounded like a baby rattle...

Just a thought, i know most stores dont have watchmakers on hand.

Most are fine but there is a certain percentage that are either nicely quiet or absurdly noisy. Loose rotors have been an issue with some but not as a general rule. Those can simply have the rotor mounting screw tightened up :)

Well I have a certified Seiko reseller near me, I'll drop the watch off there and see what he sais. What bothers me is the watch was quiet when I got it, but after 6 months it becomes loud? Seems a bit odd. I'll post an update, thanks!

Certified seller took the watch in, sais it's normal. Rotor screw was checked, tight. He also mentioned the movement wasn't the highest quality one Seiko do.

Guess i'll have to live with it. Or buy something else. Hmm...:-d
