I've been looking for the same. Searching this forum, i did not find any one definitive answer, but the most often recommended book was "1001 Wristwatches: From 1925 to the Prsent" by Haussermann. So I went ahead and purchased "1001 Wristwatches: History .Technology. Design" (It appears to be a newer version.)

My first impressions - you may want to stick with the older version (assuming they are the same content). I didnt realize this one is a smaller format at 6" x 8", and with text so small, it seems to have been designed for the larger format like the original. It also has a funky cover cutout, which I could do without.

The many fine pictures do not carry extensive info about the specific watch pictured, nor do the pictures follow the text. In fact the first section has a detailed information about how a movement is constructed, parts, function etc - without a single photo or diagram of a movement. This was a bit disconcerting - some visuals would have added indispensable value, especially for a newb like me.

The book is divided into sections by watch type - diver, chronograph, etc. There are definitely plenty of pictures of watches, and the text is detailed,. As I progress through I will post a full review.
