Since the 1960’s, Squale was a name that is known for being one of the top manufacturers of dive watches. Evidently, they produced cases for many brands like Tag Heuer, Blancpain and Doxa. Their watches are not only well-designed aesthetically but further bringing out some ingenious innovations in them. Squale has completely remade the legendary 101 ATMOS for 2020. Now with an totally new case construction featuring a helium escapement valve and updated bezel system for the gorgeous sapphire bezel that reflects yersteryears  bakelite bezel.101 ATMOS Blue Zaffiro EditionStarting with the specifications first, this tonneau case of their 101 ATMOS was something that was produced in the late 60s, being one of the 1000m dive watch pioneer, without the need of a helium escape valve(HEV). In comparison to another dive watch innovator, the Seiko’s first 600m Tuna ref. 6159-7010 came about in 1975; having a L shaped gasket instead of a common HEV. The 1000 meters watch wears like a true diving piece, measuring 44mm in diameter and thanks to its lugless design only 49mm lug to lug. The lugless tonneau style reflects the 60s/70s vibe, with a smooth flowing look overall. The Squale 101 ATMOS Blue Zaffiro Edition Ref. 2002 watch is a remake of the original 101ATMOS from the 70s. A must have for Vintage fans. Like all Squale watches, the 101 ATMOS is made in Switzerland. The Squale 101 ATMOS Sapphire Edition is powered by ETA's automatic caliber,SW 200-2/ETA2824-2 “REGLAGE ELABORÉ” , operating at 28,800 BPH (4 Hertzs) with hacking and hand winding capabilities. It has 26/25 jewels with a power reserve of 42 hours.Sunburst Blue dial with multi-faceted applied indexFurther, it comes with applied indexes like those found on those vintage Squale skin divers back then, and then are filled with SuperLuminova luminous, just like the hands. One of those watches that has to be seen in person to enjoy the beauty. The “Zaffiro” (sapphire) bezel is an upgraded material from the fragile bakelite material while keeping that old-school charm. Done in blue, it is coloured in a multi-stage process. First the phosphorescent SuperLuminova material is applied by hand, followed by colouring with varnishes immune to seawater corrosion, and then sealed into the scratch-resistant material for enhanced durability as compared to bakelite material. This guarantees that the component is warm to the touch while allowing excellent elapse-time reading thanks to the transparency. Like the model that inspired it, the bezel can always be unscrewed from above through the hexagonal ring.Integrated Automatic Helium Valve EscapementThe all new 44mm stainless steel case is also improved in the latest edition. With a more masculine lugs making the wrist presence more prominent now compared to the older case. Also new is the automatic helium escapement valve(HEV) integrated into the case is at 9 o'clock for saturation divers. The 1000 meters watch features the famous snap-on rotating bezel(uni-directional) that is secured by a hexagonal ring screwed onto the top of the case. This system, which was once a Squale's innovation now copied by many watch companies, ensures that bezel won't be accidentally rotated during underwater activities. Finally a 3.5mm thick sapphire crystal with double gasket to ensure outstanding water resistance. The new caseback is now fully engraved with an updates interpretation of the classic wave design and, of course, Squale's logo. For many years the Squale logo has been a mark of quality. All painstakingly designed details, crafted to make a product that keeps faith with the Squale brand philosophy.The 101ATMOS's discreet elegance is combined with reliability, provided for example by the Swedish steels used. The Squale 101 ATMOS features a superb Italian made ‘Tropic’ rubber strap for that added breathability.Updated caseback with new engraving techniqueThe Squale 101 ATMOS Blue Zaffiro Edition is definitely a well-done vintage and iconic Squale model that will not be mistaken for any other. The unique barrel-case shaped model that can be found in the history books of many well established brands. If you are a dive watch nut, there is no reason not to be considering the 101 ATMOS simply because it is quite the influential model and one watch that has always been copied but never outdone. For the new collectors, who wants a 60s style dive watch and doesn't like the conventional looks, this is a watch definitely worth considering. Or if you are simply looking for a solid built everyday watch that is also outstanding aesthetically. This is the watch definitely worth considering.

      Unfortunately almost anything Longines or cheaper from Swatch Group will be < 4 Hz. Tissot, Hamilton, Mido are all-in on 3 Hz "Powermatics" now. It sucks that $1000+ Swiss watches have the same seconds hand motion as a $100 Seiko 5. Case in point...

      Looking for a pool-beach-vacation beater and found this on Gnomon. Mark at LIW sells the Squale mesh bracelet to go with it. I've searched WUS and elsewhere and can't hardly find any info on the current models. Anyone here have one that can comment?

      Plan B is a Longines Hydroconquest 43mm auto. $200 more, 1mm smaller, stunning in the metal, but with a conventional design and slightly slowed-down movement.

      I have a similar problem. The Squale 101 ATMOS Blue Zaffiro is practically screaming "buy me!" I absolutely don't need another diver, let alone one from a small manufacturer with sketchy QC and non-existent customer support. Not to mention I have a love-hate relationship with Gnomon.

      Revisiting a question I thought I answered for myself a year ago o_O Ah, the insanity of this hobby.

      Looking for an automatic dive watch that I'd wear on bracelet as a vacation GADA, and on rubber around the house as a beater. (Not that I beat on my watches.) Target is $1K+ in case of travel theft or loss. I have a Mido Ocean Star 600, which checks all the boxes and more (right size, lovely colors, ISO build, local AD for service, well made, got it for $1250 from Nordstrom on sale). But the inability to put even a two-piece NATO on it is killing it for me.

      The Squale 101 Atmos keeps haunting me... It's like the hot mess of a woman at the bar, you know she's going to be trouble, but you can't resist her siren song! This Squale has the perfect vacation "look." Squale offers both a tropic rubber strap and a mesh bracelet (both are great in looks and quality). And Squale's dive heritage is without question. Bonus points for the 4Hz beat rate. But Squale QC and CS are highly questionable, and my luck with Gnomon is 50/50. Information on this watch is next to impossible to find, which worries me.


      I recently learned about the Certina DS Super PH500M. Sub-$1000 from authorized sellers (but of course no ADs in the USA), old and new dive heritage (and lots of it!), decent looks (though not as stunning as the others). I'd have to add my own straps, as there's no included bracelet and I dislike the included rubber strap, which would catch the price of this one up to the others.
