I would look at Beijing or SeaGull, both are very well made watches at a reasonable price. I don't own a Beijing (yet) but I do have a SeaGull and I must say I was very impressed with the build quality.

The BeiHai is a beautiful example from Beijing:

Beijing Beihai limited edition SB18 manual hand-winding mechanical wach

I am also a fan of the WuYi reissue by SeaGull:

      "51" WuYi reissue China's 1st mechanical watch by Sea-Gull

There are plenty of models to chose from, take a look around and see what you like.

P.S. Never thought I'd see someone else from London on this forum, welcome!

I have seen that there is

      1) 1963 Chronographs White/Panda dial 38mm vs 40mm vs ( 1963(#38mm)_SPECIAL EDITION_SEA-GULL Seagullwatch Singapore )

      vs D304 which costs a lot more ( D304_LIMITED EDITION_SEA-GULL Seagullwatch Singapore )

      2) Wuxing 5 stars
      FKWX_SPECIAL EDITION_SEA-GULL Seagullwatch Singapore

      Only 1 version for this?

      3) Wuyi flowery Sea-Gull golden flowery patterned 51 WuYi reissue automatic
      Wuyi US limited -SeaGull USA
Wuyi normal "51" WuYi reissue China's 1st mechanical watch by Sea-Gull

For i.e I believe the D304 is the official pilot chrono by Sea-gull.

Sea-gull watches are affordable enough that we didn't want to confuse ourselves by buying brand non endorsing models.

From the 3 examples above, may I know which is the official merchandise or is it all of them are official or "official".

      Thanks.

Thanks for all the recommendations! I did a lot more research and have some more questions.

HMT Janatas: Does the glass scratch easily and are they fairly reliable? How does it compare to say the Parnis and how do these two compare to the Unitas ETA (wrt to quickly apparent issues GunWale mentioned)?

So far I've come to settle on the Classic Sea-Gull D819.612 mainly for its aesthetic and thinness, Wuyi 51 reissue and HMT Janata for its price vs looks balance and possibly a Hamilton Roadway Express.

What other vintage brands are good to look out for?

I came across a Seiko King Quartz and somehow it just strikes a perfect balance in aesthetics for me. Is there a hand wind or even automatic version?

Not sure if Seiko currently makes any handwinder. Look for Seiko Skyliner among vintages.

Hmt janata is reliable and has in true vintage style acryl crystal which scratches because it is plastic but easy to polish.
Nearly all vintage watches will have acryl btw.
I recommend among handwind vintages for something affordable yet reliable to check the czech brand Prim and sometimes even Zenith. Yea, THAT Zenith, but usually with a refinished dial in that budget!

I forgot a splendid new option, a 1963 handwind chrono. I have a 42mm, historically accurate models are 38mm, pm member hked for info. It is actually my most complimented upon watch.
