For two brothers who loved watches, but also favored microbrands, Bern Watches began as a passion project, and in 2017, they began to imagine not simply collecting watches but also producing their own. Two years, more than 100 design revisions, and three rounds of prototyping later, and brothers Amin and Amyn Tharani are proud to roll out the Milford, a rugged, vintage-styled dive watch featuring multiple color combinations and an attainable price point.

One look at the Milford reveals that these two did their homework — the hands are diamond-cut and applied with Swiss X1-Grade GL-C3 Super-LumiNova, as are the indices. Like any authentic dive watch, the bezel clicks unidirectionally, 120 times for a full revolution. A sapphire crystal and anti-reflective coating are standard. The case is 42mm in diameter, with 22mm lugs, which offer great presence without looking too gaudy.

Key to the design were drop angles, as seen on the lugs, the bezel, crown guards, and even the hands, adding a three-dimensional element to what is already an elegantly simple form. The NH35 movement is tried and true, beloved among microbrand aficionados: built by Seiko, it is capable of hand-winding and hacking, is fully automatic and beats 21,600 times per hour, offering 41 hours of power. Being microbrand enthusiasts themselves, the Tharani brothers wanted to go with what is reliable, popular, and won’t drive up prices on their design.

The earliest Milfords will be available in an array of attractive colors: stainless steel, bronze, and black PVD, with different bezel and dial colors that nicely complement the drop angles, the beefy bezel, and the crown guard. The black PVD model even comes with black, white, or forest green dial colors, for that extra field watch feel. Oiled genuine calf leather straps match these dial colors, for the perfect custom touch, resulting in a watch that’s as unique as the person wearing it.

For adventurers, outdoor enthusiasts, and future Jacques Cousteaus, the Milford is a lot of watch for the money. It reflects Bern’s quest for a unique design, one that was also functional, reliable, and affordable. To that end, the Milford is currently being offered with special early bird pricing. Just $299 USD will net you one of the first 500 pieces — a savings of $300 off the full retail price of $599 USD.

These first 500 pieces will be available via Bern’s Kickstarter campaign, which also includes special backer rewards, other exclusive perks, plus a promise to ship watches out within 2 weeks! (Once the initial 500 piece production run is complete, all remaining orders will ship within 12 weeks.)
