I’ve came across this explorer 1 recently and can’t figure out if it’s authentic or not, according to the serial code it’s a 2004 example. Never really looked at Explorer 1s properly before so I do not have much confidence in my own judgment.

Any thoughts/comments?

Thanks in advance

Seems very unrefined to me but could be the crappy photos. Also I've never seen an etched crown be that big and visible...

Someone who knows more will come along soon....I wouldn't buy that with your money though. Although I'll admit...I'm not sure why.

I'll agree that the ghost crown shouldn't be that legible also I don't like that rehaut letter alignment, they should hit each marker centered way better.

Just did a quick search - as I had thought the ROLEXROLEXROLEX rehaut wasn't introduced until later. Looks like 2004 was the first year to get it, but the 114270 didn't get the engraved rehaut until much later. That plus the visible crown etching and the bad rehaut engraving, I'm calling shenanigans.

No that ain’t right. 2004 would have the numerals painted white, not with lume, just paint to match. Wasn’t till after the exp was resized to 39mm where you have the unpainted/unlumed Arabic numerals. Maybe you meant 2014 - 214270?

It’s a F serial number and checking the register it shows F were produced between 2003-2005. That’s what I based everything on unless I’m completely mistaken? All my Rolexes were from mind 2010s from ADs so I don’t have much experience with older ones especially Explorer

214270 has 2 variations
mk 1 released in 2010
Mk 2 - released in 2016

mk 1 has the blacked out numerals and short minute hands
Mk 2 chroma light lume numerals + longer hands

Can confirm it needs a good clean. A sign the seller could be hiding something or just not bothered because it's a fake watch.

In terms of "buy the seller" this is a pass for me.

How much is it being offered for?

It’s not a watch I’m purchasing, it belongs to an acquaintance of mine and I’m trying to help them out, it was left in a box for a few years and not worn hence it’s rather dirty, I’ll have the watch tomorrow and will give it a good clean to find out what’s underneath the grime.

not saying these two statements are mutually exclusive but...statement 1 suggests something not at all like statement 2

That rehaut has enough questionable engraving that I'd avoid on that alone.

Also, left in a box does not lead to 'dirty'. Unless that box held early winter cross-country trail shoes.

Your acquaintance could just take it to a jeweler for verification. Better yet, take it to a pawn shop that will nitpick each detail to ensure they're not receiving a fake.
