Re: Torpedo Theme

I wonder, would Laco be happy to install an ETA instead, and lower the cost to under 1000 Euro?
The thought has already risen. However, let's get the theme vote out of the way and address this issue in the upcoming MOVEMENT thread; Laco have sent me a couple of pictures of the Durowe decorated that I will post there.

Regardless, everyone will have to make up their own mind as to whether or not the projected cost represents a good value for a limited edition custom designed watch.
Sorry Uwe, but the firm cost of ~ US$2200 forces me to drop out, too. I don't question the value, just my disposable income versus the ability of my marriage to bounce back within a reasonable amount of time. I will follow the project with great interest, though!

Thanks for your hard work leading this project.

Kind Regards to All,

Sorry to be a downer but I call BS on that. I've seen completed overhauled Hamilton 917 movement watches offered by various watch makers including Chris Pappas for around 100 dollars more than a similarly equipped ETA 2824 watch. So unless they are extensively modifying the movement, that just can't justify the price.

Well, this has turned into an interesting situation.

In Laco's defense, the cost of completely overhauling each movement is an expense that would not have been incurred had an off-the-shelf ETA movement been used for this project. And therein lies the irony; the decision to use a Durowe movement in order to make this project more special has become its greatest stumbling block. Laco has also mentioned the cost of dial and hand manufacturing has risen since the last WUS project watch was completed.

Regardless, everyone will have to make up their own mind as to whether or not the projected cost represents a good value for a limited edition custom designed watch. I'm sure that many here have spent a lot more for a watch that was produced in the the thousands and could be purchased through any number of retail locations. I know I have. Yet, in retrospect there was nothing really unique about them. Even if I wasn't managing this project I would be inclined to stay the course rather than risk missing out on what has the potential to become a very interesting watch.

I think you are right, Uwe, about the added cost due to the movement.

They can always put it in a LE of their own making!

People are going to bail left and right if they haven't already because of this. I think this order has a potential to be really great with the direction so far, but the movement and price are becoming an issue.

I just picked up a new PO for less than this, struggling to see how it can be justified. Not to mention my other LE I'm setting up with a higher end company that is at approximately the same price! o|

I'm still reading everything. If for some reason the price drops down to a reasonable level, I'll jump back in if there's room for me!
Same here. I was really excited about getting in on the ground floor, and I love Lacos, but I just couldn't swing the price. If the scope changes and the price becomes more affordable and if there's still room, I'd be thrilled to jump back in.

Re: Torpedo Theme

I am not Uwe, the Special Project Manager, but I would like to put forward 2 suggestions:

One goes to our Laco rep. and Mod, "LacoPforzheim", to start reconsidering the cost and movement on offer, and come up with some cheaper alternatives. Do not forget the help and support we here on WUS have given you, and continue happily to give.
We believed in your company even in the darkest moments.
I and many of the members here own multiple Lacos

We would like this exciting Project to happen, not to evaporate into nothing!

The other suggestion is, that you guys that can not swing the current price, to continue and participate in the discussions. We need the input and ideas from all of you.
The more the merrier.

THEME Vote Results

I SCREWED UP!

I'm very sorry and a special thanks to CzechMate for pointing out that I had accidentally switched the top two in my haste to post the results. The Artillery theme is the actual winner.

The THEME voting has ended and here are the results, which have been independently verified by CzechMate. We'll next start a discussion thread on the case to be used for the project and another thread to deal with the movement.

Vote Results:
1. Artillery(winner)
2. B-Uhr
3. Navy
4. Timer
5. Civilian
6. Navy B-Uhr
7. Historical
8. Navigation
9. Flieger

Re: THEME Vote Results

It's awfully quiet out there. Is it time to fold up the chairs, pack the tents and tell the band they can go home?

If Laco's pricing was such a sticker shock, I'd like to know what everyone's expectations were for the cost of a one-in-fifty special edition.

This one has been selected as a base for the S.P.

Do not worry, Uwe, we all make misstakes sometimes....

My price point was $1000 to $1200 US. Maybe I had unrealistic hopes.

ad 1: very quiet indeed. I wonder how many people are still in: 34 people have cast their votes, several of these also mentioned that they're out

ad 2: Not sure what I was expecting, but let me list my references:
  • Doxa SUB1200T DWL - series of 99 only 74 available to the general public: $1,690
  • Doxa SUB1200T Numa - series of 50: $1,690
  • MKII Kingston - series of 300: plank order $700 (100 pieces, come with essentially a complete spare watch sans movement), general order $875
  • MKII Quad10 - not sure how many have been produced, but <<100: $675
  • Orient 60th Anniversary LE in steel - 300 pieces for the USA: $480 (most have used the on-line 50% off coupon and got it for $240)

The price is kind of high. There are at least two ways to reduce the costs: 1) do not brother to decorate the NOS movement; 2) just use a standard ETA movement. And for majority of us who are not living in EU zone, we can deduct the 19% VAT tax so our final price will be lower than 1500 euro.

For me, hopefully the final price is under 1000 Euro. But I do like the theme we picked so I will stay for now

Re: THEME Vote Results

Can we see a picture of the movement that is proposed by Laco?
If I understand correctly the NOS movement will be disassembled, decorated, assembled and regulated?
Although I'm not in, I like the chosen theme.

Hi Frank_be!! Life has been good to you lately?

I believe that decoration is not in the base price.

Re: THEME Vote Results

Hi Janne,

Long time no see ;-)
Last August I broke my ancle bone and severely twisted my foot but I'm almost fully recovered from it. (btw it had nothing to do with paragliding)
This year I will graduate as a watchmaker and during the last year I have been buying a lot of watchmakers tools... the latest I bought was a Greiner Compact 900 with the new AM10 automatic microphone. It's a great watchmakers tool and it stands out to the Witschi tools IMHO.
