As a fan of the work Rick and his team did with the DOXA SUBs, I was eagerly awaiting this release but I'm not going in on the pre-order just yet.
While I didn't love the new Deepstar's visual design at first, on further examination, it gets better-looking every time I see it. The lug-to-lug isn't an issue for me personally and long/protruding lugs can be a valid style choice, too, sometimes. I understand the complaints, though.
It has been hard to come by additional information on the movement, which appears to be some variant of the La Joux-Perret caliber LJP7773 (although SJX claims it's the caliber LJP82010). Either way, if we're talking about a column-wheel modification with some decoration under the solid caseback, that's nothing to sneer at.
LJP aren't some fly-by-night operation, certainly not with Citizen now backing them; they're serious operators. So even though Rick's history would suggest otherwise, the lack of transparency here had me worried initially that there was some mystery-meat movement inside that Aquastar wasn't keen on discussing. I'd still like to know more about it, even if we just got a schematic diagram.
My other concern is the forthcoming bracelet. I imagine supply-chain issues are responsible for it not being available at launch but I'd still like to see what it looks like, especially the end-links and the clasp (milled? micro-adjustable?). I'm not keen on either of the included straps so, given the choice today, I would have bought this on a bracelet and nothing else. Since that isn't an option for the people who pre-order the Deepstar now, will the bracelet also be offered at a discount when it becomes available? Cheers.
On a side note, the Deepstar seems like a very good candidate for an only-watch, for those so inclined.
