As a fan of the work Rick and his team did with the DOXA SUBs, I was eagerly awaiting this release but I'm not going in on the pre-order just yet.

While I didn't love the new Deepstar's visual design at first, on further examination, it gets better-looking every time I see it. The lug-to-lug isn't an issue for me personally and long/protruding lugs can be a valid style choice, too, sometimes. I understand the complaints, though.

It has been hard to come by additional information on the movement, which appears to be some variant of the La Joux-Perret caliber LJP7773 (although SJX claims it's the caliber LJP82010). Either way, if we're talking about a column-wheel modification with some decoration under the solid caseback, that's nothing to sneer at.

LJP aren't some fly-by-night operation, certainly not with Citizen now backing them; they're serious operators. So even though Rick's history would suggest otherwise, the lack of transparency here had me worried initially that there was some mystery-meat movement inside that Aquastar wasn't keen on discussing. I'd still like to know more about it, even if we just got a schematic diagram.

My other concern is the forthcoming bracelet. I imagine supply-chain issues are responsible for it not being available at launch but I'd still like to see what it looks like, especially the end-links and the clasp (milled? micro-adjustable?). I'm not keen on either of the included straps so, given the choice today, I would have bought this on a bracelet and nothing else. Since that isn't an option for the people who pre-order the Deepstar now, will the bracelet also be offered at a discount when it becomes available? Cheers.

On a side note, the Deepstar seems like a very good candidate for an only-watch, for those so inclined.

Dear RedViola, first off, thank you for your encouraging words. I am deeply grateful to all members and to WatchUseek as the platform that enabled this type of discussion. None of the brands that I brought back over the last 20 years would have ever come that far without you and without WatchUseek. I am proud of my team and without them, I would never have achieved a fraction of this success.

For decades the Swiss high-end movement maker La Joux-Perret stood in the shadow of the brands they manufacture customized movements for, you would be surprised to know how many high-end watches are powered by a LJP caliber that they call their own MANUFACTURE movement.

The Caliber that powers the 2020 Deepstar is based on the LJP 7773, adapted to the functions of the 2020 Deepstar. While the 7773 is physically compatible to the ETA 7753, which means that a watch case, hands, pushers and dials designed for an ETA 7753, can also be used for a LJP 7773, otherwise they don't have much in common.
The LJP 7773 is a refined caliber, extremely well finished and doesn't have any plastic parts, equipped with a column wheel that makes the operation of the pushers crispy and smooth, while it is a gem, it doesn't come with the alures, its service intervals are like any other ETA caliber and the service costs are as low as a common ETA caliber.

I like to emphasize that there is no lack of transparency intended and there is no mystery here of any kind. The brand relaunch and the 2020 Deepstar release were the major talking point in the community and that's maybe why the movement topic received less attention. Aquastar is proud to be a partner of LJP and you are welcome to ask any questions. I attached a picture of the base movement.

Like its predecessor, the 2020 Deepstar was originally designed for strap use, it wasn't until a few weeks ago, that a decision was made to offer a stainless steel bracelet. The bracelet is a classic separate beads of rice bracelet with integrated endlinks. The bracelet is $189 but will be made available to everyone who preordered the 2020 Deepstar at $139.00.

Thank you!
Rick

Frankly I'm surprised at the lack of excitement over this movement...how many column wheel chronographs can one think of...in a beautifully executed robust and classic dive watch...from a respected Swiss manufacture...at near this price?

Really loving the Deepstar inside and out.

Agreed!! @Synchron any thoughts on offering a sapphire case back to display this beautiful movement? love the historically accurate case back just as well, and assume sapphire would add additional thickness overall, but it would be a treat to see it in action.

...eagerly awaiting my steel grey

Stunning watch, but I hate that it's a limited edition. It should be a flagship model for the brand. Imagine if Rolex made the submariner a limited edition with just 900 units.
Yes, "Limited Editions" are one of the dumbest things a watch company could do. Look at Doxa - they have reached the "Limit" of their Limited Editions, running themselves right out of business because they cannot keep selling popular pieces - they were limited. Short sighted, unlike Rolex which keeps on with successful models for decades, and it has rewarded them.

As far as I know, DOXA is still in business...

And as for Rolex, they might as well be limited editions as it is near impossible to to actually purchase the sports models!

Doxa is still in business - for now. Most of all the nice watches they produced are no longer available, so that is putting them 'out of business'.

Most of the Rolex 'sport' models are being sent to Asia, their biggest buyers.
