Hello everybody,

This is my first post to the forums, though hopefully it won't be my last. I have a couple questions that I was hoping some of you experts might be able to help me out with. I've already read through a lot of the posts about Archimedes and have gotten most of my questions answered. (These forums have been so helpful!)

To start out, I have never bought a watch over $65.00 before, but now that I am entering the real world (wearing a suit to work every day etc) I figured the time was right. I set an initial budget cap around $300, but have since upped that (particularly after I discovered the Archimede collection). Initially I looked at Swiss Army, Citizen, Hamilton, etc. Though once I saw the Pilot I was basically sold. (Especially fitting since I am about to start work at a private aviation firm--though not as a pilot!)

So here are the last questions I'd like answered before I place the order.

1. Is the titanium option worth it? Is it much lighter or more durable? What do you guys think here?

2. Is the deployant clasp worth it? Does it add anything besides aesthetic value? It's only $60 and I figure this will probably be my every day watch for at least a year, so I might as well get it exactly how I want it.

3. I am a bit confused about their ordering process. Do I really just fill out that short form and fill in the price etc. on my own? This is a little bit more "do it yourself" than most e-commerce sites, and I just wanted to make sure i had it right.

4. I am fairly certain I am going with a 42mm, though I was considering the 39mm. My wrist is just shy of 7 inches. Like I said this watch is for every day use, but I'll be wearing at work with a suit and tie. Might 42mm look a bit over the top? I just tried on a couple 42mm watches at a shop in my neighborhood and they didn't look too big to me. Do the Pilots "wear big?" -- I understand that this is primarily a personal preference thing.

Thanks so much guys. I really appreciate any advice. I'm hoping to place the order in the next few days. I'll be sure to post pictures once I receive the watch!

Best wishes,
Mike

Oh and one last question. It seems as though the Stowa Fliegers are not way more expensive than the Archimes. Especially if I were to go with the Titanium Archimede. Again I know comparisons have been made before. What do you all think of the possibility of stepping up to the Stowa? Is it really worth the extra money?

Also when they list the prices online they say what it costs without the value added tax. As an American customer do I have to pay VAT?

You do not have to pay VAT as a US citizen. This review will answer some of your questions. Regarding "Archimede vs Stowa" I would like to refer to our search function here on WUS. Plenty of posts, opinions.

Mike,

Thanks so much for the reference. This post was helpful. I did search around and found most of the answers I was looking for. I'll be sure to review my experience with Archimede once I get the watch.

Cheers,
Mike

I really love Archimede's watches and have my second one on the way now. The order process is more manual than most e-commerce sites, yes.

I don't think the Ti is worth it. I think the weight savings is 10 or 11 grams.

I think the 42mm would be an excellent fit on your size wrist. That's the one I'd choose if that were my wrist size.

Stowas are beauties for sure (I have one of these on the way as well), but a bit more expensive, plus the shipping is added on (Archimede prices include shipping). Also keep in mind that Stowa lead time seems to be running about three or four months right now.

Let us know how you like it!

I'm sure you've found most of your questions answered already but if I may, here is my take.

Stowa is in a bit of a higher class yes but you will wait about 3 months for one and it will cost a bit more. That's entirely up to you.

That said, the Archimede is an amazing value! Archimede is Ickler and they make their own cases as well as cases for their other brands and other companies. The case is lovely and the finish is outstanding. I own a 42mm pilot and it is a fantastic value.

The order process is more manual but just fill out the form and they will take care of the rest. It can take a week or two to receive to the States but possibly sooner. They should send you a tracking # when the watch ships so you can follow the progress. Be specific on the form as much as you can. Also note that Watchmann in the States is an authorized dealer and have the models in stock. Greg Stein is great to deal with! Highly recommended and you will not get a FedEx statement for duty afterward. (It's only like $10 anyway). If you order from Germany, you do not pay VAT to the States.

I would go with the 42mm. My wrist is 7.25 and it would still work on a 7.0 wrist IMO. It's all dial but it works without looking clownish. The lugs are not too long and a flieger is meant to largish IMO. :)

The deployant clasp is aesthetically nice yes, but it also saves wear and tear on the leather strap especially if it's you're every day watch.

I think that you'll enjoy the Archimede. It is great value for the money IMO.

Oh, lastly re:titanium. I did not got for this. The weight is minimal for the SS, not much weight savings as menioned. Ti scratches easier than SS and I also feel the SS is more in keeping with the flieger tradition plus you also have the added cost for the Ti. If you like Ti, don't let this stop you though. It is kinda cool but I just prefer the SS.

Most of all, congrats on your new job and welcome to WUS! Please update us when you make your choice.

Thanks so much for all of the advice guys. Based on your input and some research of my own I am ready to pull the trigger on the 42mm Stainless Pilot with the deployant clasp.

I couldn't be more excited to get it. Will be sure to post a few pics and comments when it comes.

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks so much. Just placed the order a couple hours ago... after convincing Wachovia's fraud detection department that I really did want to transfer $600 to a German watch company.

Should be here soon. Can't wait.
