I remember seeing them at places like Target and KMart. They were very basic models, I think the equivalent of Carriage by Timex ladies watches, but in sizes for men, if that makes sense.

 

Do you remember or know more or less when the line was introduced? What differentiated them from the regular Timex line?

 

Sorry...can't give you much info however the earliest Acqua I have is 1987....the only difference i can see between it and the same 87 Timex is a cheaper plain printed dial and black non plated hands...same case , mov't ... cheers p

 

I seem to recall seeing an Acqua for sale at KMart with a windup movement in 1992. I remember going back to see it again a few days later, I think I was planning to buy it, and they were out. It's like that was the end of the line for cheap mechanicals, practically that very week.

Technically, Timex might have made a wind-up in 1996. But they were not common at all by the time I got into watches in 1992. I know because I used to look at watches every time I walked into any store. I never saw a Timex windup. I bought my first Timex as a kid in 1983 and it was a quartz. I think by 1983 they were pretty much phased out by quartz, since I believe that is when Swatch appeared.

 

My first manual wind Timex was bought for me in 1954....trust me they were around in our stores till 1996 .... Cheers p

That's cool. I'm sure they had a stock of unused windup movements for a long time. There also could have been a lot NOS (new old stock) watches floating around in stores for years, like old drug store dusty display cases.

I have a wind-up ACQUA watch from the early 1980's and it Still works to this day, with the date on the right side of the face. It's mainly silver toned, with gold around the face. Also, the face inside is silver. I let my sister wear it for the Longest time, and she accidentally washed it in the washing machine. She let it completely dry out, and it Still works to this day. Hi, my name is Angela, from eastern North Carolina but live in Colorado now. I am wearing it now. I rarely do though. I bought it from Kmart in Tarboro North Carolina where I'm from. The price was I think $12.99, plus tax. I wouldn't trade it for Nothing in this world....I am looking up the value, and to me I think it's worth Way more than what I have found. Just like the original Timex Indiglo. I love it.
I wonder if there was any real difference between this brand and Tinex in terns of quality. Maybe they were cheaper only because they didn't have Timex logo.

Wow, I stumbled onto the Acqua listing and recalled buying one and sharing it here several years ago. It's been 4 years almost to the day and the seller is still clearing out the last of them. Although, if I correctly recall, there were eighty-something available at the time.

The watches are probably of identical quality to name-brand Timexes. It was more likely retailer-driven. The brands were either made specifically for a certain retailer, like K-Mart, Target, etc, or it was a way to maximize retailer displays with two brands instead of one.
