Apologies if this has been asked before, but scrolling through Instagram, I was curious what sort of discount employees at ADs receive? Based on some collections I see online which are Rolex centric, I would assume discounts are fairly generous, or sales incentives are in the form of watches. Either that or I’m in the wrong profession!

And, thus we fantasize...daydreaming....I love Rolex watches...I'd like to own pretty much the entire line...I spend hours online at WUS, scrolling through the Rolex forum...hours at other on line Rolex forums...if only I could figure out some way to buy these gems at close to wholesale...hmmmm....wait!...I could get a job at an AD!...spend my entire day chatting up fellow watch enthusiasts about our shared love of all things Rolex...certainly, not all of these walk up's would buy, but I could probably sell at least one or two per day and then the store would love me and allow me to stock up on the catalog at dealer's cost...boy oh boy...then my photos on WUS would have them all salivating...

Reality...retail sales behind a counter...a boss that demands sales production on all items in the store...low cost watches, high cost watches, earrings, bracelets, rings, baubles, bangles and beads...leisurely chats with fellow Rolex admirers?...get your ass away from that time waster and start selling to other people in the store!...Rolex prospects educated in the ways of gray market selling/buying...'just let me try on a bunch of models...take up your sales time...and, they think to themselves, what was DavidSW's email address again?'...What, you can't meet the gray seller's price? Well, I'll think about it and be back when I want to try on a whole bunch of other models. Hey, you (the boss) want me to learn about the attributes of Mido and Tissot watches? You want me to polish the display cases? Work on Sunday? Be polite to everyone including the rude people? And, my hourly of $17 per hour on a bad week with poor sales and no commission isn't enough to buy a Big Mac?

The life of a retail clerk, even one selling Rolex and Tudor watches isn't anything like playing around on these forums, where we all seem to have unlimited amounts of money and motivation to discuss the relative merits of platinum Daytona's versus the white gold Day Date. And, most likely, even if you could arrange a seasonal clerk's job at a Rolex AD at christmas, it's unlikely they'd unlock the employee discount at the end of your tenure on New Years Day. And, really, think about this...would you really want your career and income to depend on savvy forum members who know exactly what they want and how much below retail they're willing to pay? And, do you really want to start studying gemology in addition to product knowledge on IWC watches?

Think about it. Sometimes what you wish for isn't really what you want.

I was being sarcastic about changing professions, but your response hits on what prompted my original post. I've been curious how some employees at ADs seem to be able to accumulate the collections they do on what I am assuming is a relatively modest salary.

Retail sucks.

Working at these boutiques and jewelry stores must be even worse.

Chatting up everyone and showing them around and investing your time and energy only to get blue-balled MOST of the time. Hell no, no amount of discounting could get me to do that for a living. Keep your damn Rolex.

Retail at the countertop stinks. It takes a special person (victim) to handle the general pubic gracefully day in, day out. No thanks.

I'd imagine that it would depend on the AD. Unless you mean at a Rolex boutique?
I was referring to ADs that stock Rolex as opposed to Rolex boutiques. I've spoken to some employees as I'm browsing, and follow certain instagram accounts where they seem to amass great collections, more so than I would have expected given typical retail salaries.

When I purchased my DSSD in 2011, from Ernest Jones, the sales guy informed me that he receives 40% discount, on Rolex watches.
However, he was only allowed to purchase one every two years.

I think it's a question of priorities. Anybody can have a beautiful collection if that is their sole interest.

Not specific to Rolex but when my wife worked for a company within the richemont group she could have 50% off products from her subsidiary company and 40% any other subsidiary in the group...so IWC, Panerai, JLC & Cartier to name a few, although there were certain restrictions within each company. Generally normal production models were fine. It was great for me...i got quite a few brand new watches at 40 % and when the IWC portugeuser automatic got upgraded recently I got the outgoing model at 70% off!!
