G'day All,

I'm looking at purchasing a G-Shock for when I exercise (running/swimming/gym). I'm thinking it needs to:

  • be digital only, so it can be clearly read at all times and quickly
  • be able handle (heaps of) sweat
  • get dirty as I'll use it outdoors
  • be able to handle swimming in the pool and in the ocean (but not diving)
  • have good countdown timer functions
  • have a clear to read stop-watch that is also simple for other people to use (people timing me).
  • have atomic timekeeping for low maintainence (I'm in Australia but I've heard the signals can get that far)
I was thinking of the Casio G-Shock Mudman GW-9010-1JF (see pic) - any other recommendations?

:thanks

Cheers,
Paul

Welcome to the forums Paul, and yes, that's a solid choice for your requirements.

I could also suggest the GW-9100 Gulfman which has titanium parts, for that bit you mentioned about ocean swims and heaps of sweat. Titanium is also hypoallergenic, if your skin happens to react adversely to certain metals. The only downside is that it only has a 60-minute timer, compared to the 24-hour timer on the GW-9010.

That looks like a great choice. It's not as bulky as it looks and is fairly light as well.

Its a little more cash but you might consider a Protrek/Pathfinder. I have a PAW-1300 that is great for exercising - mainly because the visible screen is a bit bigger than most G-shocks. Very easy to glance down and see your timing.

forget about the mudman (any model) if you want to time your activities while running or swimming. the buttons are already too stiff to press with dry hands comfortably but with wet hands it will be a PITA, i promise.

actually the ONLY G i have seen and own to date with big, fat and easy to access/press buttons (even with thick winter gloves!) is the G-7900. if you are looking for an atomic/solar model go with the GW-7900 but i don't recommend the model with negative display.

cheers

Welcome! Cool watch for sure, but the G in the center is only visible when it is recieving, and 98% of the time it just looks like a blank hole there. I sold mine soley for that reason, just seems like somethings missing. As cal..45 recommended GW-7900A would be a great choice, as long as you like a very big watch, which I do so no problems there! Good luck with your search! You really can't go wrong with any G, they are Awesome watches and will take what ever you throw at them!:-!

Hi, Paul. Truthfully, any G-Shock will be fine.

However, let's suppose you're as hyperanalytical as the rest of us. In my opinion, the "perfect" G-Shock is the GW200MS-1. Consider these advantages of the 200 series Frogman:

1. Screwback. The Mudman doesn't have a screwback. The Frogman does have a screwback.

2. Titanium caseback. The Mudman has a steel caseback. The Frogman (and the Gulfman) have a titanium caseback. A titanium caseback is better for exercise, aquatic activities, heat/humidity, rainfall, etc.

3. The strap keeper. The keeper on the Mudman is okay, but it doesn't stay in place as well as the keeper on a Frogman or a Gulfman.

4. The strap. The straps on the Frogman (and Gulfman) are designed to be worn more loosely than the Mudman strap. I prefer that. The Mudman strap is comfortable, but the Frogman/Gulfman straps are more comfortable in my opinion.

5. No atomic timekeeping. In the time it takes me to take off my Mudman and place it by a specific window with a specific orientation to enable reception, I can reset the time on my Frogman to the second at the time.gov site for free. Atomic timekeeping is a gimmick. I can reset the time on my Frogman in mere seconds.

6. Long-term cost. You will notice a lot of guys complain about the price of the Frogman. However, the combined cost of their various G-Shocks usually surpasses the cost of a Frogman. The lifespan of a Frogman can be extended by purchasing spare parts at a nominal cost. For example:

Most G-Shocks do not have a screwback. Without a screwback, why buy spare parts?

At any rate, any G-Shock will be fine. I have the orange/black "Smashing Pumpkin" version of the GW-9010 Mudman, and I love it. However, the GW200MS-1 is a superior watch.

As much as I love my mudman, I have to agree here.

I agree, the Mudman buttons are too stiff for workouts. I use my (non-atomic) Gulfman for gym workouts, including swimming. The Riseman would work, but I think the chlorinated water tends to bleach the plastic. My Gulfman is more of a beater than my Riseman.

did you paint the bezel or did you some frankenwork on this one?

regards, holger
Looks like the bezel from a G-7710C-2ER:

I'v been thinking about doing an 'MS' mod - taking a G-7710CL - for the strap adapters - the module from a G-7710C-4ER (either inverted or leaving it as it is) and the black bezel ring from a G-7710C-2ER - then putting it all together (stealthing the letters of course) and with a nice 24mm Zulu with black hardware  - I think it'd look fantastic :-!.

Greetings, Sedi :)

i actually would go with a *simpler* G like GW6900, less feature (i.e. sensors) means it has less parts to go wrong.

Some of us like the Mudman's case. but not everybody does. and i rather have a solild and easy to operate metal button, which is easy to everybody to use. when you may have let somebody else to operate the chronograph, sure-footed buttons may be easier to use.

not that there's anything wrong with GW9010 mudman, you should get the watch that you like

definitely go with the 7700 or 7710. They are absolutely ideal for what you are looking for besides the atomic sync. I agree that atomic sync is gadget more then necessity but that is also coming from a gadget freak that owns almost all atomics. I would/am using my 7700 for all athletic endeavors due to it's ability to time and save to sessions of lap times for recall later with the feature of showing you best lap time as well. It also has a delayed start button so you can hit start and you have 5 seconds countdown until the stopwatch starts to get into position in the pool or running or riding. Bar none the watch for exercise is the 7700.

Thanks for all the help guys ... much appreciated. All the watches you suggested would great - in fact, I think tyler is right in saying that any g-shock would work for all the city-based activities I do.

I'm going to get one of G-7700 or G-7710 models - it's not atomic or solar, but it's best suited to lap timing, stop-watch work and countdown timers which is what I need most. I like the G-7710RL-2 best (although it was discontinued in 2007):

Paul

Its a Frankenshock.
The green parts of the Kawasaki edition where exchanged with black ones from the plain 7700-1 version.

Its more or less whats left over by giving the green Kawasaki some chrome parts. :-d

Yeah, I have a 7710 and I use it for jogging and cycling. The stopwatch feature is truly awesome and as for the outdoors use, I've fallen off my bike countless times and the watch always came out better than me. :-d
As for atomic timekeeping, I also live in Australia and from what I can tell, the signals don't reach us. But apparently there is a way around this. You have to set your home city to Tokyo overnight and let it sync, then reset the home city to Sydney in the morning. Don't know if this works though.
