Not bad! I think that with this rather busy dial it would look great on a plain (black) NATO. The modern oyster bracelets are superb but sometimes it is refreshing to see that certain models could turn out to be strap monsters (e.g. Explorer 39mm or Exp II 16750).

Just got my 5501 back from being serviced today by a local CW21. The previous dial was either non-gen or refinished per the RSC and they wouldn't touch it. I found a dial on ebay which was in great shape, appropriate to the model/vintage, and is marked "Precision" which is also appropriate to the 1520 movement. No repairs needed and he said the movement was in like new condition. Seals replaced and WR tested to 2ATM. The watch has obviously been worn very little in the past 50 years so it's something of a time capsule. It even still has the 5501 sticker on the caseback. The original Rolex black alligator strap is also in great shape, but I swapped it out for a CF matte gold alligator.

I like the unique look of the current Air King and am considering it as my next purchase. The only issue I have is the lack of lume aside from the twelve marker and the hands. Has anyone had any issues with this as they wear the watch on a daily basis?

Nope.

If you can afford a Rolex, you can afford to switch on the lights. Lume is unnecessary.

Edit: fixed the typo

If you plan on wearing it to bed, lume may be important to you. If you regularly take off your watches before going to sleep, I wouldn't worry about it.
