Ambit programming with Movescount.com

I've posted a bunch of Ambit info this week, but haven't had a chance to put together a small summary of one of the really strong points until now. Suunto has spent some real time on their Moveslink2 / Movescount web site integration with the Ambit. This is good an bad. It's certainly easier to program multiple settings from the website, but it limits you to a web connected Windows or Mac computer.

Here's a short intro to the Exercise / capture profiles on the Ambit. When you enter the Exercise menu on the watch you are presented with multiple profile choices like:

Watch Watch accessory Analog watch Dive computer Fashion accessory

The watch has no way to edit this menu yet, but on the Movescount website, you have full control of the menu items. Once you link your Ambit to your Movescount account, you will find this menu under menu Private | Gear | Suunto Ambit | Customization:

The Driving item was added by me and is not a standard profile on the Ambit.

The running profile has these screen displays setup by default

And you control data logging and other advanced settings from the same area

When you add a new profile, you can leave it without an activity / sport defined and type in a name, as I did for the Driving profile I created

All the fields are editable by clicking on a display location

The bottom field can display more than 1 field, and shows up with a label (3) views, (4) views, etc. This is the only place I've found a small bug so far. There is no obvious way to change the bottom field from a single view to a multi-view. It looks to me like you can open it with the single view editor, then try to multi-select (Ctrl-click on Windows) and close the dialog. Click on the field again and it will come up in multi-element select mode.

Excellent thread. I like what I see. I think there is so much misinformation and speculation out there that we need a Ambit sticky information thread. I plan on contributing a lot when mine comes.
Yes indeed, great thread!:-!

I see you created a drive profile. I have not seen any reports with regards to the Ambits GPS performance inside a car.

How well does it get a good signal inside a car?

For the X10 it could take 5 minutes to get a signal inside a car and the watch face had to be placed facing outwards a window to get a 4-5 bar signal strength.
cobrapa, that looks great and I think customization on the computer is fine, these are settings that probably won't get changed often. Nice post and thanks for all of the info. I am having a hard time waiting for mine, which will arrive on Tuesday. The setup for customization is so much better than the Garmins, which are done on the watch and much more limited.

The Ambit and X10 gps are worlds apart in signal reception. I've never failed to get a gps lock, even inside the house (single story, I haven't tried the basement yet...) I suspect there are two or three differences. The new antenna lobe and gps chip are the major changes. The gps signal strength icon is so small that you'll hardly notice when it drops down a level as well. And it may be very optimistic in it's display of status. Car, house... always seem to show 3 little bars. I just tried it again in the house, it reported gps acquired in 40s. 3bars. Left navigation mode, re-entered, gps acquired in 6s. I assume the accuracy is down because of lower signal strength in the house, but it still shows full gps signal on it's littly tiny icon.

In the car it doesn't seem to matter location or orientation either. I haven't done extensive testing, but I don't need to leave it on the dash to get a signal. Throw it on the seat or in a cupholder in the middle of the car, it still acquires.

Cool I am very interested in the profile you made for driving! I ordered a Ambit(Black) and I am going to use it mainly on my motorcycle. Perhaps as a back-up for my old(er) GPS device on my motorcycle.
Greetzz,
Geert
