Anybody know anything about these Aussie quartz "workmen's watches?" Taurus

I really like the looks of a couple of them:

They have other models with Arabic numerals, blue dials and titanium.

316L stainless steel, sapphire crystal and Miyota (Citizen) quartz movements ... Seems like you can get them in the $70-ish range (U.S.) on eBay.

For less than the cost of a Parnis, these seem like nice, well-made watches. Taurus happens to be my astrological sign, too.

I saw them on the bay as well and then saw your post. There is very little information out there about them. I'm tempted as well. From photos all I can gather is that the hands hitting the markers is hit and miss, and the bracelet end link fitment is a little loose- not really a big deal to me at this price point. What I would like to know, is which Miyota movement (battery type, life), does it have a screwdown crown and does the watch have any lume?

Shipping came to $14 and change, the $20 is in AU. The watch will come in around $110 on the invoice. I believe watches declared over $86ish dollars are subject to duties- thankfully customs seem to be pretty lax on this for individual items.

Depending on how important water resistance is to you all, you might want to check out the Alba APBT field watch on Amazon. Ti/200m/12-24/Seiko Quartz. $73 shipped. A friend here at WUS put me onto it, but the smaller size put me off. The Taurus may prove to be too small for my 7.75" wrist too.

I'm waiting on answers to the questions I had from the seller (crystal size, lume, screwdown, etc.) I'll post the answers as soon as I hear back. I ordered the bracelet, but will likely move it to a zulu strap (it's currently my preference on just about every watch I own.) I have a bunch of 20s and 22s so a bunch of photos will follow (providing there is enough space between the bar and case.) I've noticed in photos there is a noticable difference in finish between the case and the bracelet, which has me wondering about the composition of the bracelet. Titanium bracelets (of any quality) at this price point are pretty rare.

OK, I got a reply . . . here are some answers . . .
Movement - Miyota 2115
Expected Battery Life - 24mo
Crown does not screw down
Hands are luminous
Crystal is 32mm/Case is 39mm/Width with Crown is 45
Entire case is blast finished- no polished parts
Bracelet is 8"- seller will supply more links if neccesary.

I failed to ask if the bracelet was indeed Ti. Oh well, just part of the surprise when it arrives.

Lots of detail, so I'm wondering if Gastraders isn't actually Taurus selling on Ebay.

Sounds like a pretty good start for the watch, can't wait to hear your impressions in person. They very well could be the company selling online, I know several other makers who sell direct on the bay also. Isn't a bad thing, just gives them more views. I hope this watch is decent cause now I want one :)

You are very welcome Rocat. I noticed those gaps with the bracelet as well. Leads me to believe folded metal endlinks. I know some end links can be tightened up with some reshaping, but if they are Ti, I'll be apprehensive to bend Ti too much (more brittle than SS), also it will mark up much easier than SS. Mine is headed straight to a zulu. I've gotten in the habit of purchasing the bracelet models for a couple of reasons. First, if there isn't room for a strap, the bracelet generally looks best. Second, if you have to flip the watch, or give it as a gift, the bracelet verions is the premium option.

It's funny you bring up the BN0100 . . . it's on my list for pick up. A fellow WUS member keeps reminding me to make sure I get the bracelet (even though he can't get on with the extension clasp.) I am concerned about the gap on the Excal. I had to work the bars on after laying the strap on with my Infusion, and it wasn't a totally pleasant experience. That was with a thicker zulu strap though. A thinner nato may be in order for the Excal.

That's good news of course, and I had read that. Still the photos of the bracelet version do show some gaps in fitment. Hopefully the final fit on what arrives will be tighter. I will be exceptionally pleased if fit and finish rival the better examples from other major brands- that will make this all titanium package a substantial value purchase.

Mine arrived, after 11 days from Australia. It actually sat at the infamous Chicago postal center for a few of those days.

Let's have a look:

The little tough box is a nice touch -- though it would be better if it was signed in some way.

It came set to my Eastern Standard Time, which was a nice touch as well.

I did not get the bracelet. Mine came on this black velcro "sports strap" thing. I didn't care because I had an already existing, specific leather strap in mind for this watch. The sports strap? Meh. They call these "workmen's watches," and if you were going to wear this on the construction site or something, I suppose this strap would be appropriate.

Now, about that leather strap. I bought it for another watch I ordered that I had to send back. So there sat this strap I really liked, and in the back of my mind, I kept thinking about finding a watch that would work great with it. 22mm. Found a couple of watches that looked good, but, no dice. They were 20mm lug width. When I saw this one was 22mm lugs, I thought it would work quite well.

So finally this watch arrives. Off with the sports strap, on with my leather that has sat in the drawer for months ... only to discover ... it's 20mm. I coulda swore it was .... Grrr....

In a fit of irritation, I put it on anyway. Hell, I may keep it on out of spite.

The dial design is sharp. I like the orange indices, and the minute ring around the inside of the bezel. The handset looks good with it. The white, though, isn't as brilliant as I'm used to. With the sapphire crystal on it, that would be an improvement over this kind of dull white. It hasn't been charged with any light, but I see no hint of lume.

The brushed SS case is 40mm, 45mm with the crown and crown guards -- both of which I like. The dial area is a little smaller than I usually go with at 30mm -- 40mm watches are within my comfort zone, but that smaller face almost makes this look a little small on my 8.5-inch wrist. I think it still works for me, though. And I imagine it will work with somebody with a much smaller wrist as well.

All in all, I'm not blown away, but I'm not disappointed. It's a solid watch, particularly for the price point. I look forward to seeing the other dial iterations and ones with bracelet.

And my Ti/bracelet version arrived last week . . . I was away from home, but opened the box tonight.

Initial impressions . . .
Very nice ti brushed finished- which is consistent across the entire case and bracelet. Stop, what's that? The ends of the bracelet links are high polished!! Not everyone is going to like that, I'm on the fence for now. The watch box itself is nice, solid. The end links are solid and sit nicely between the lugs without any play- at some angles the bracelet/case fit appears to have gaps. On the bracelet the watch has a very nice countoured fit to the wrist and wears very thin and light. The dial isn't too busy- simple arabic numerals, minute markers with 5, 10, 15 on the chapter ring. Hands are long blade style with the hour hand slightly wider than the minute hand. The all red second hand stands out nicely. The crown has the cross hatch knurl, and is SS, which stands out from the all Ti groove. The crown guards protect all but the very end of the crown. The bracelet uses single pins which weren't all too difficult to remove/replace to resize the bracelet. The bracelet clasp is a double fold/single lock. The clasp design is very clean. My arabic numerals are lumed as are the hands and a small triangle on the seconds hand. The hands are in blue and the numerals are in green. Before you get too excited about the lume, it's very dim. Perhaps I'm spoiled with Citizen Blue and Seiko Lumibrite, but the lume is basically unusable. It's really ashame too, because blue/green combo is nice.

My watch also came set to my local time . . . nice touch.

My only gripe at this point . . . the space between the case and the spring bars. Meaning there isn't much. This isn't an issue at all using the bracelet, but switching to heavier zulu style straps requires the pins to be installed over the strap- with a substancial amount of "urging." I did get positive clicks from the bars, but don't know that I like the amount of pressure I had to apply to install them. Perhaps a thinner nato style would be better, but after eyeballing the gap, even a thin nato may not simply slide through.

Photos . . .

The pictures are very good and show the detail. Thanks for them.
The crown looks big and beefy, that's nice. So the lume is weak and the spring bars are very close to the case. Is the lume like Casio's,pretty much very weak? Is a Bertucci A2T Ti comparable in quality?

Hi All. I own the Taurus brand and I was pleasantly surprised to see some comments on this forum. When I started out establishing these watches, I didn't think they would be of interest to enthusiasts (because of the quartz movement). I have been involved in the watch industry for about 10 years, but just started this brand up about 12 months ago. I could see a niche for well made, durable watches that could take some punishment, at a decent price.

Thanks for the comments - even the negative ones. It is good to get feedback. I happen to agree with all the constructive criticism. I will be doing a few things differently next time I re-stock: 1) Better lume. 2)Better fit between bracelet end link and the case. 3)Slightly different lug/case design to allow aftermarket bands to fit more easily. I was pretty frustrated that the first two of these weren't better from the start - dealing with China can be incredibly frustrating. The third one was my lack of forethought.

I've been selling quite a few into the US. The exchange rate makes them look pretty cheap I suppose. I think the Titanium models, in particular, are good value. I can confirm that the bracelet is titanium. I am also the person selling them on Ebay. I am using Ebay to try and establish a fair market value. Pretty soon the price on Ebay will be the same as the website.

Hi everyone!

Surprisingly enough, I've found a Taurus watch in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Having owned the watch for approximately a month or so, and having given it a fair amount of beating, I thought it'd be good to share my experience with this watch, perhaps it could be of some help.

First of all, the looks of this watch is pretty good. The pictures in the website doesn't make justice for it, it's much nicer when you have it on your hands. I like the fact that it is a simple watch and it's doesnt try to squeeze numbers and uses just markers in such small space, but it'd be good if it would have been just a couple mm bigger, let's say 42mm. Nevertheless, as I said the pictures doesn't make justice for it, the brushed finish does live up to a higher expectation than what the pics show, and it's pretty well finished overall.

However, there are some nuisances that need to be said:

- The space between lugs on the case is not brushed as the rest of the watch, it still has the machinery marks. That is not bad at all and for me it reinforces the feeling of a watch made for a worker, but it's there, and it seems out of place when you consider that the brushed finish is so well done on the rest of the watch.

- The bottom of the case in the space between the lugs is roughly finished and it has a sharp edge, so it damages a leather strap. In my other watches, this is space has been milled a little to allow free movement of the strap when it rotates around the springbars. In this watch this hasn't been done, hence when the strap rotates, the friction against the edge on the bottom of the case damages the strap (english is not my native tongue, so if explanation isn't clear enough I can post a pic).

- The watch suffered a fall, around 1.5m (5ft) height, and although nothing happened to the mechanism, sapphire crystal or case, the seconds sweep hand jumped off, so I had to take the watch to a watch repair service (of course, there's no warranty service here, and I bought it second hand anyways).

- The lume could be better. It's not bad, but it takes longer exposition to light to achieve good luminosity (at least longer than my Wenger Commando Chrono) and the luminosity goes away faster. A nice detail, is that the markers are green coloured, and the hands are blue coloured.

- The crown is very well protected. The knurling on the crown is also very nicely done. It'd have been a nice detail to see a logo engraved on the crown, but nevertheless it's very nicely done.

Despite these issues, I'm overall pretty happy with the watch. I'm not a fan of rotating watches, and I tend to stick with a single watch in my wrist for long periods (that's why eventually all my watched end up pretty beaten). I was looking for a nice looking watch that could still take a beating with some confidence, and this watch fills the bill (though it's the first time a hand jumps off, I attribute this to some poor mounting).

Best regards,
Sebastian
