I am curious as to what is said on this Aviator dial. My Russian is rusty (read nonexistent!). TIA.

It is said on the Aviator dial:

18 камней - 18 jewels
противоударные - shock-proof
----------------
летающий танк - flying tank
штурмовик ИЛ-2 - ground attack aircraft IL-2 (Iljushin-2)

Maybe you are right, Andy :)
My dictionary says:
штурмовик - low-flying attack aircraft (Br.)
штурмовик - attack plane (Am.)
Wikipedia says: IL-2 is a ground attack aircraft
"Hedge-hopper" means "a low flying aircraft" - so, the meaning is clear anyway. I do not know exactly which word people in America or UK really use for this type of aircraft:think:

I know that "Flying Tank" is commonly used to describe the Sturmovik... at least any American I've met that was familiar with Russian aircraft called it that...
