Aureole was a Swiss watch brand founded in 1868. You can still find vintage watches produced by this original Aureole. In 1984 Aureole trademark was bought by Japanese watch manufacturer Wakoh Co Ltd. Since then Wakoh is producing quartz watches in Japan under Aureole brand with original Aureole logo. Aureole homepage.
Usually cheap Aureole quartz watches are nothing special. This watch here is an exception – sterling silver case is nowadays not so easy to find. There are many vintage silver case pocket watches on sale. To find a contemporary silver dress watch is a challenge. (See also Sterling silver wrist watches.)
This watch is small – diameter 32 mm – but is made for men! In Aureole serial numbers the last character is always M (Men’s) or L (Ladies).
My wrists are so small, 16 cm, that I can wear it without problems.
What else is not so common with this watch is that here we have only 24 hours hand and minutes hand, no seconds at all. Equipped is the watch with Ronda 751.24. 751 movement is a two-hand movement, with only hours and minutes. Funny, it makes a “tick” in every 10 seconds.
The silver dial is very nice, clear and readable. Blue hands fit perfectly here. Below on the dial is written SWISS MOV’T.
On the case back is text:
[925 silver proof mark]
4N – I have a hypothesis that this is the production date. If we use the same formula as with Seiko, then 4 = 1994 and N = November. Sounds logical. Beside me my friend Saiken in Japan has the same watch he bought in 1999, and another version of this Aureole watch bought in 1995.
Water protection level is not known. Most probably it is 3 ATM, as it is common with snap caseback and gasket.
Very nice and original dress watch. Unfortunately, I think, unacceptably small for most of you.
PS. The box on the pictures is original Japanese Aureole, but from another watch.
